METRO DETROIT — A look at five things to do during the weekend of Sept. 6-8

NOVI — Kwame Kilpatrick, the former mayor of Detroit who was elected as a Democrat and convicted in 2013 of embezzling thousands of dollars from the city during his tenure as mayor, was a featured speaker at the Oakland County Republican Party’s annual Lincoln Day Dinner at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi Aug. 21.

NORTHERN MICHIGAN — The Leelanau Peninsula gets a lot of attention in the fall. When the woodsy hills explode in fiery shades of red, orange and yellow, M-22 becomes a river of cars, campers and RVs.

NOVI — The annual Michigan State Fair rolls into the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi Aug. 29 through Sept. 2, and with it a logrolling show and several familiar attractions, including the Shrine Circus.

NOVI — In the Aug. 6 primary election, Novi voters chose or helped to choose which candidates advanced to the general election in November.

OAKLAND COUNTY — Impaired driving crashes across Michigan are on the rise, a troubling statistic released in a study from Bridge Michigan, which also found that police across the state are not making as many arrests for drunk driving as they have in the past.

After serving more than five years in a Russian labor colony, Paul Whelan, a retired U.S. Marine and Novi resident, is a free man today.

NOVI — People’s Express, which on July 1 took over in Novi as the provider of curb-to-curb transit services, will be housed at the Novi Civic Center until the end of the year as part of an agreement with the city.
