Police investigate shooting that took place in parking lot

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — The Shelby Township Police Department is investigating a shooting that took place Jan. 6 in a parking lot near the intersection of 23 Mile Road and Shelby Road.

The shooting occurred at approximately 1:17 p.m. just outside the CVS Pharmacy located at 50840 Shelby Road.

Two men who are related had met in the parking lot and an altercation ensued. Shots were fired and one of the men was hit multiple times.

Police are not releasing what the dispute was about.

“The investigation is ongoing,” Shelby Township Police Detective Lt. Patrick Barnard said in an email.

The two men reportedly are cousins. A 53-year-old man from Shelby Township was shot multiple times, police said. A 60-year-old man from Sterling Heights was the shooter, according to police. He was released pending further investigation.

As of Jan. 8, the man who was shot was still hospitalized.

“We will present a case to the (Macomb County) Prosecutor’s Office at the conclusion of the investigation,” Shelby Township Police Capt. Jason Schmittler said in an email.

Police are asking anyone who might have seen or might know anything about the incident to call the department.

“Witnesses to the shooting or any individuals with information relevant to the investigation are asked to contact the Shelby Township Police Department at (586) 731-2121,” said Schmittler.
