ROSEVILLE/GROSSE POINTES/ST. CLAIR SHORES — When Nichole Shier launched Neighborhood Masonry Specialists in April 2014, she wanted more than a successful company. As a single mother, she set out to build a lasting family business grounded in craftsmanship, personal service and something she could one day pass down to the next generation.

Today, Nichole works alongside her son, Jamie Shier, who began laying brick at 17 and now serves as project manager, leading the company’s master masons and overseeing jobs from start to finish. Her daughter-in-law, Carlie Shier, handles bookkeeping, payroll and administrative operations.

A lot has changed since the business began. Nichole and Jamie are now both licensed builders, allowing them to take on a broader range of residential work, from masonry restoration to larger exterior improvements. While masonry remains at the core of the business, roofing has become a larger part of the mix. They also now have a building in Roseville while continuing to serve homeowners throughout the Grosse Pointes and St. Clair Shores.

Nichole said growth has never changed the team’s commitment to personal service and quality work. “We focus on quality over quantity,” she said. “Our customers aren’t just another dollar sign to us; we truly care about them.”

Recent projects reflect the care Nichole and her team bring to each job. One standout project was at 34 Moross Rd. in Grosse Pointe Farms for homeowners Jessica and Karl Gustafson. There, the team excavated the backyard and created a bluestone patio, a reclaimed-brick and limestone courtyard, and a rebuilt rear entrance with custom details, sconces and lighting. While they were on-site, a tornado tore through the area and caused major damage to the home and grounds, forcing them to redo other parts of the job. Remarkably, the masonry itself was untouched. “It was crazy the way it happened,” Nichole said. “It didn’t touch one brick.”

Another major project at 77 Renaud Rd. in Grosse Pointe Shores for homeowner Scott Cheney also highlighted the company’s expanded capabilities. That job included excavation, a bluestone patio with limestone borders, cascading steps, entrance details and finished walkway work that helped transform the outdoor space.

For Nichole, this has always been about more than construction. Her hope is that Jamie will eventually take over the company, and that her grandsons, William and Austin, will have the same opportunity if they choose to follow in his footsteps.
