SHELBY TOWNSHIP — At Shelby Orthodontics, Dr. Kathy Elias has built a practice around something many patients want but do not always find: clear guidance, personalized care and treatment options that make sense for their lives. Knowing that no two smiles or treatment plans are exactly alike, her lifelong goal was to open a practice that serves the community while giving patients a more tailored level of care.
When Dr. Elias was 12, she had a tooth knocked out, and the incident left a lasting impression. “I realized how much my smile affected my confidence,” she said. “Even as a teen, I felt like I wasn’t getting my treatment options or that they weren’t explained well enough to me or my family.”
That experience still shapes the way Shelby Orthodontics cares for patients today. Complimentary consultations typically last 30 to 45 minutes and focus on goals, treatment choices and a realistic timeline.
“Communication is huge for me,” Dr. Elias said. “I want people to feel welcomed, feel heard and feel confident in their treatment plan.”
She treats children, teens and adults, with attention not just to straight teeth, but also to bite, facial balance, jaw development and soft tissue. In younger children, that can mean identifying concerns early enough to simplify later treatment or even prevent bigger problems down the road.
Shelby Orthodontics offers metal braces, clear ceramic braces and Invisalign clear aligners. Dr. Elias helps patients decide what fits best with their needs, goals and lifestyle. For instance, braces can offer the most control, while Invisalign can be a great option for patients willing to wear it as directed.
Technology is a major part of that process, Dr. Elias said. Rather than using the traditional gooey impressions many patients still remember from years past, she uses a digital scanner to capture detailed images of the teeth. She then maps tooth movement digitally to create a precise treatment plan.
“I’ve invested in all the equipment to provide the best treatment,” she said, adding that it helps her envision the outcome, anticipate challenges, and create a plan to address issues before treatment even begins.
Continuity of care also sets her practice apart. Dr. Elias remains hands-on at every appointment, monitoring progress herself and explaining what comes next in a welcoming office with semi-private treatment rooms. Additionally, there is flexible scheduling that includes early morning appointments, evening hours and even two Saturdays a month that makes starting treatment convenient for individuals and families.
“It’s really an honor to spend that time with my patients over the course of treatment and see how they grow,” she said.
