UTICA — Alexander Gerth, of Utica, has been sentenced to at least three years and up to six years in prison for stabbing a dog and leaving him to die in Grant Park in Utica. Gerth, 23, appeared in front of Judge Richard Caretti at the 16th Circuit Court April 23 for his sentencing.

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — A contractor for the planned renovation of Shelby Township’s new activities center has been chosen, as work will begin soon on the building. The Shelby Township Board of Trustees voted unanimously to approve awarding the contract for the activities center renovation project to Brencal Contractors Inc., of Warren, at its April 16 meeting.

UTICA/STERLING HEIGHTS — A young Utica High School student helped a local Sterling Heights church earlier this year introduce Braille to art that was being installed on a wall in the church. Calliandra Bowman-Tomlinson, a Utica High senior who lives in Sterling Heights, spent hours teaching a fellow church member Braille so that it could be included with the art.
