ST. CLAIR SHORES — What do Katniss Everdeen, Harry Potter and Snow White all have in common?
Besides the fact they’re all childhood icons, they’ll be live on ice at the St. Clair Shores Civic Arena from April 28-30.
A staple in the St. Clair Shores community for decades, the St. Clair Shores Figure Skating Club is returning for its 51st annual “Reflections on Ice” ice show, which will focus on “Bedtime Stories” this year following their “Night at the Museum” show in 2022.
While showcasing bedtime favorites for the little ones, the show will also present some teen-based stories as well.
St. Clair Shores Figure Skating Club Director Claire LaDue said she likes to create out-of-the-box ice shows when thinking of a theme.
“I try to be a little bit more unique,” LaDue said. “I try not to do cookie-cutter stories that everybody does. I guess it’s just something I’ve had on my mind to do for a few years. I have a list I want to get to, and this one was next up on my list.”
With over 100 figure skaters from the metro Detroit area, including St. Clair Shores Figure Skating Club alumni, ranging in ages from 3-60, it truly is a wonderful community-driven event to be a part of.
The skating routines will include duets, group numbers and solos from the club’s most accomplished regional and section-level skaters.
Don’t be surprised to see the seven dwarfs from Snow White perform a synchronized skate or to hear music from 15 bedtime story favorites.
It’s a sight to see, and it wouldn’t be a show without special appearances Friday and Saturday night from pewter medalists Emilea Zingas and Vadym Kolesnik, who finished fourth at the U.S. national championships as a duo in ice dance this year.
A Grosse Pointe native and Grosse Pointe South graduate, Zingas has been a part of the St. Clair Shores Figure Skating Club since 2008 and has yet to miss an ice show since.
Now competing professionally, Zingas said it’s an emotional feeling coming back for the ice show.
“It’s a little bittersweet,” Zingas said. “I love going back to Shores. It was a home for me for so many years. I still represent the St. Clair Shores Figure Skating Club, which is something I’m really proud of, but it’s different for me this past year not being there every day and not seeing my coaches I’ve had for the last 12 years every day. Going back there is so great being able to see everyone, but it does make me a little sad that I kind of had to leave that part of my life behind, but I’m really excited to skate in the show and see some old faces and some new faces.”
The Friday show will start at 7:30 p.m. while Saturday will hold two shows, at 1 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The weekend will conclude with a 2 p.m. showing on Sunday.
Tickets are $10 for children and seniors, while adults are $15. Tickets can be purchased in advance or on the day of the show at the Civic Arena.
For any interested young skaters looking at potentially being a part of the club, Zingas had high praise for her relationship and time with the club, its skaters and coaches.
“Shores is a big reason why I’m the person and the skater I am today,” Zingas said. “It just means a lot to me.”
