ST. CLAIR SHORES — Foster children will be provided with cozy blankets this holiday season, thanks to the Optimist Club of St. Clair Shores.

On Thursday, Nov. 17, and Tuesday, Nov. 29, “no sew” blankets will be assembled by volunteers at the Lake Shore Public Schools North Shore building, formerly the adult and community education building, located at 23055 Masonic Blvd.

The “blanket-making party” will benefit the Macomb Foster Closet’s collection drive. It is one of many events that the Optimist Club has hosted over the past seven years in support of local foster children and kids in surrounding communities.

“We invite volunteers to join us in helping the children. All that is required is a smile, a big heart and a good pair of scissors, as well as a fleece ‘no sew’ blanket, which can be purchased at JOANN Fabrics,” Optimist Club of St. Clair Shores President Debbie DePape said. “Once the blankets are finished, they will be distributed by the Macomb Foster Closet. They will provide the children with comfort and warmth throughout the holidays.”

Volunteers are asked to gather at the North Shore building between 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Tables and chairs will be set up. The doors will open at 5:45 p.m.

“We will help you get started on the blankets,” DePape said. “They are really simple to assemble. Also, you can look for 50%-off coupons at JOANN Fabrics or order from an online vendor, such as Amazon.”

Light refreshments will be provided at the event.

RSVP to Maureen Wark at (586) 246-2559. You can also email DePape at Deb216@aol.com or connect with the group on Facebook Messenger through the Optimist Club of St. Clair Shores.

In addition, between 8:30 a.m. and noon Dec. 5 to Dec. 9, the club will set up a weeklong collection drive to gather gently used clothing for children (newborn through 18 years of age). During this time, club members will be there to greet you and accept donations.

Items sought include backpacks, suitcases, diapers, toys and anything useful for children. The drop-off zone will also be at Lake Shore’s North Shore building on Masonic.
