WARREN — Even though her three children have graduated from Warren Woods Tower High School, Jennifer Nitz still wanted to be involved with Warren Woods Public Schools.
Her contributions to the district will continue.
At the Dec. 11 Board of Education meeting, Nitz was appointed to the school board in a 4-2 vote. Mike Fitzpatrick made the motion to name Nitz to the school board while Paul Zannetti supported the motion.
“Jennifer is a fantastic supporter of the district,” Fitzpatrick said. “She’s got great qualifications to be on the board. She has great credentials to bring to the board.”
Board members Michael Garcia and Scott Hiller also voted in favor of naming Nitz to the school board, while Mike Schulte and Kay Walsh voted against the measure. The new board member was present during the meeting.
“I’m honored. I’m really excited to be able to serve,” Nitz said after the meeting. “I have a passion for the community. I love the diversity of the district. I love the tight-knit community. People take care of each other.”
With the appointment of Nitz, the Board of Education filled the vacancy after Jere Green announced his resignation Oct. 10. Green, who has served on the board 29 years, is moving out of the district.
At the Nov. 20 school board meeting, the board interviewed the five candidates including Nitz, Jason Chamberlain, Marie Daleo, Michael Rose and Douglas Rivers. Each candidate was interviewed individually.
And if the Nitz name looks familiar to the Warren Woods Public Schools family, that’s because Nitz’s husband, Aaron, is a teacher at Warren Woods Middle School.
Although Schutle and Walsh voted against the appointment, they both congratulated Nitz after the meeting, as did the other board members and several administrators.
Nitz is scheduled to serve at her first meeting Jan. 22, 2024, and will serve in the appointed seat until Dec. 31, 2024, at which point whoever is elected to the seat in the November 2024 election will serve the remainder of Green’s term of office, set to expire in 2028.
