Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, nearly two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation, when Union soldiers arrived in Texas, and Gen. Gordon Granger issued an order proclaiming that all enslaved people are free. The following are local celebrations honoring the historic event:
