OXFORD — All season, Chippewa Valley wrestling coach Scott Kolesky has talked with his team about bringing home hardware.

That hardware he’s mentioned are medals for placing at the MHSAA individual state tournament, which starts March 5 at The Palace of Auburn Hills.

Four Big Reds — Tristan Szajna, Jalen Goudelock, Jon Price and Vinny Dolland — will have an opportunity to earn that hardware.

“They set some goals at the beginning of the season, and they worked hard to achieve them,” Kolesky said. “It’s not just getting there, so if you set your goal at something and you work hard for it, you have a great chance of achieving it.”

Szajna, a 152-pounder, qualified for states by taking second in his flight at the Oxford regional on Feb. 21.

Szajna defeated Greg Bobchick from Utica Eisenhower in the quarterfinals by a 4-1 decision. He then went on to beat Utica’s Nick Mason by major decision before falling to Tyler Grimsley from Anchor Bay in the final by a 10-9 decision.

“Tristan (Szajna) has battled with that guy in a couple of one-point matches throughout the last couple of years,” Kolesky said of Szajna’s regional final. “He’s always a tough competitor — Tyler Grimsley from Anchor Bay — so we’ll see. Maybe they’ll meet again at The Palace.”

Szajna lost in the blood round at states last year, so Kolesky hopes he can go one round further to bring home a medal.

“He’s a very seasoned and veteran wrestler. He knows what’s expected and what to expect,” Kolesky said. “He has great work ethic, and he’s been there and done it.”

Szajna will open his state tournament against Dominic Adams, a senior from Brother Rice.

The other three Big Reds heading to states will be making their first appearances at The Palace.

At 189 pounds, Goudelock qualified for states by winning a pair of matches in the consolation bracket at regionals after falling in his first bout.

Goudelock won by pinfall against Fraser’s Paul Shock before beating teammate Oscar Flores by a 1-0 decision in the blood round. He will face Nick May from Kalamazoo Loy-Norrix in the opening round at states.

In the 130-pound bracket, Jon Price defeated Anthony Aul from Utica to start his day at regionals. He fell to Vinny Vackaro from Oxford in a semifinal bout, but won against Jake Anderson from Rochester Adams by major decision in the blood round.

Price will take on Josh Brower from Grandville to begin states.

At 160 pounds, Vinny Dolland won his first match at regionals by beating Anthony Orselli of Lake Orion by a 7-2 decision.

He lost his semifinal match to Sam Addy from Adams, but rallied to defeat Andrew Powerski from Utica in the blood round to qualify for states.

Dolland will face Myles Amine from Detroit Catholic Central to start his state tournament.
