WARREN — The Warren Cousino boys tennis team was victorious at the first annual Tennis For Troops Tournament, which took place Sept. 14 at Halmich Park in Warren.

The Patriots (4-2-0, 0-1-0 Macomb Area Conference Red Division) bested Fraser in the final to claim the title. Cousino and Warren Mott served as hosts of the tournament.

Warren Mott biology teacher Dawn Ross said the first annual Tennis For Troops tournament was a success.

EASTPOINTE — East Detroit High School senior No. 1 golfer Zak Gray is a three-time qualifier for the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 1 regionals — including qualifying this spring.

Gray, who will study Actuarial Science at Olivet College in the fall, has also been named to the All-Macomb Area Conference Silver Division team, along with receiving academic All-State honors. Gray is also an accomplished tennis player, having led the Shamrocks to a MAC Blue title in 2012.

Three local teams that battled their way through district tournaments saw their seasons end in 2013 Michigan High School Athletic Association regional rounds.

The St. Clair Shores South Lake and Lake Shore boys golf teams fell in a 2013 MHSAA Division 2 golf regional that took place June 6 at the Fieldstone Golf Club in Auburn Hills.

The Cavaliers and Shorians tallied a 369 and 383, respectively. Senior Bryan Cloud paced South Lake with an 87. Senior Mike Bartl led Lake Shore with an 83.

Grosse Pointe South, from the MAC Red, took third place in the state finals, finishing with 20 points. Port Huron Northern was the D-1 state champion, scoring 24 points, and Farmington Hills Mercy finished as the state runner-up (22).

Grosse Pointe schools were well-represented at a Division 1 regional meet hosted by Grosse Pointe South May 17, as Grosse Pointe North’s boys team and South’s girls team each came away as regional champions.

The Norsemen’s boys title came after posting a score of 133.50, while South’s girls scored 226.50, which set a new school record.

North’s girls team also had a big day, finishing second to South with 88.50 points, while the boys from South finished second to North with 101.50 points.

All three girls tennis teams from Grosse Pointe extended their seasons for a couple of more weeks, as Grosse Pointe South, North and Liggett all emerged from their respective regionals May 16-17 and will compete May 31-June 1 in the state finals.

The Blue Devils will defend their D-1 title at the Midland Community Center after winning the regional they hosted. North won the regional it hosted and will compete in the D-2 finals at Grand Blanc/Holly, and the Knights from University Liggett finished second in the Almont regional and will swing away in D-4 at Kalamazoo College.

A win would give the Cavaliers their first league title since going back-to-back in 2008 and 2009.

MACOMB —The Macomb Lutheran North boys golf team does not shy away from tough competition, according to coach Mike Morris.

So far this season, the Mustangs have faced two of the top teams in Division 1 (Detroit Catholic Central and Birmingham Brother Rice) and one of the best teams in Division 2 (Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook). That’s done by design, Morris said, and prepares Lutheran North for the stiff competition it will see in the 2013 Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 3 state playoffs.

Ferndale High senior Owen Carroll remembers getting the call as a freshman.

At the time, he believed he had qualified as an individual to the regional level of the state golf tournament, winning in a playoff to secure the final spot in the field at his district.

Then the voice on the other end of the line told him that there had been a scoring error and, in fact, he hadn’t made it.

Now, in his final season with the Eagles, Carroll has no intention of leaving it up to a playoff.

East Detroit High boys golf coach Walt Demaris — the only golf coach the Shamrocks’ program has had in its seven-year history — said this year’s team has several strengths, but none bigger than its ability to take in and retain information, using it to the best of their ability on the course.

“Most of my players have only been playing competitive golf for two years and have improved tremendously in a very short period of time,” said Demaris, whose team sat at 3-2 overall and in the Macomb Area Conference Silver Division at press time.

St. Clair Shores Lakeview girls tennis coach Colette Buckberry has turned the varsity program into one to be reckoned with.

In three years as Lakeview coach, Buckberry has guided Lakeview to two straight division titles, with the Huskies winning the Macomb Area Conference Gold Division title this year after winning the Silver in 2012.

Lakeview had two non-league matches left in the regular season — both of which were played after press time — against Warren Mott and Clinton Township Chippewa Valley.

In only his first season at West Bloomfield High, Dennis Royal is making his mark with the girls tennis program.

At press time, the Lakers were 9-2 overall and 2-1 in the Oakland Activities Association Red Division.

“I’m having a really good time with it,” Royal said. “I’ve worked with all of these girls before, so when they needed a coach, I decided I would do it.”

The fact that this is their last season playing together hasn’t escaped Ferndale High seniors Kayla and Katlynn Hughes.

The twins have shared the same side of the tennis court the last four seasons, including the last two at No. 1 doubles for the Eagles. This season, they are also the captains.

“It’s definitely a learning experience and has brought us closer together because we have to work through a lot of our problems on the court and off the court,” Kayla Hughes said.

For as much as it has already accomplished, Grosse Pointe South’s track and field team has a chance to do something coach Steve Zaranek said only two other programs in the state ever have — win a third consecutive state title.

Zaranek thinks his team is well aware of what is at stake and the expectations that come with being a part of the program.
