STERLING HEIGHTS — The St. Clair Shores South Lake High boys golf team is in a tight race with Warren Cousino for the Macomb Area Conference Gold Division title.

A win would give the Cavaliers their first league title since going back-to-back in 2008 and 2009.

“It’d be nice to have a banner up in the gym,” said senior Bryan Cloud.

MACOMB —The Macomb Lutheran North boys golf team does not shy away from tough competition, according to coach Mike Morris.

So far this season, the Mustangs have faced two of the top teams in Division 1 (Detroit Catholic Central and Birmingham Brother Rice) and one of the best teams in Division 2 (Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook). That’s done by design, Morris said, and prepares Lutheran North for the stiff competition it will see in the 2013 Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 3 state playoffs.

Ferndale High senior Owen Carroll remembers getting the call as a freshman.

At the time, he believed he had qualified as an individual to the regional level of the state golf tournament, winning in a playoff to secure the final spot in the field at his district.

Then the voice on the other end of the line told him that there had been a scoring error and, in fact, he hadn’t made it.

Now, in his final season with the Eagles, Carroll has no intention of leaving it up to a playoff.

East Detroit High boys golf coach Walt Demaris — the only golf coach the Shamrocks’ program has had in its seven-year history — said this year’s team has several strengths, but none bigger than its ability to take in and retain information, using it to the best of their ability on the course.

“Most of my players have only been playing competitive golf for two years and have improved tremendously in a very short period of time,” said Demaris, whose team sat at 3-2 overall and in the Macomb Area Conference Silver Division at press time.

The fact that this is their last season playing together hasn’t escaped Ferndale High seniors Kayla and Katlynn Hughes.

The twins have shared the same side of the tennis court the last four seasons, including the last two at No. 1 doubles for the Eagles. This season, they are also the captains.

“It’s definitely a learning experience and has brought us closer together because we have to work through a lot of our problems on the court and off the court,” Kayla Hughes said.

The scheduled start to practice had come and gone, and slowly, with a smile, Ralph Haney simply accepted it.

His Clawson High baseball team was scattered throughout the school gymnasium, but stretching arms and recapping a day of classes was about as much work that could possibly be done.

Even throwing a ball back and forth was impossible.

“You have to love practicing inside,” Haney joked.
