It didn’t fully sink in to Grosse Pointe Farms resident Coalter Smith until about a week later.

This past September, the 14-year-old golfer earned a spot in the Drive, Chip & Putt competition finals after winning his regional at the Prestwick Village Golf Club in Highland.

The win means Smith is heading to Augusta National Golf Club, home of The Masters, April 5.

The Horizon League Golf Championship is scheduled for April 24-26 at Las Colinas in Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida, and if recent history is any indication, the road to the women’s title may have to go through the University of Detroit Mercy.

The Titans have won three of the last five championships and will enter this season’s tournament as back-to-back champions.

Given all the recent success, it probably shouldn’t come as much of a surprise if the expectation level is high within Detroit’s program.

OAKLAND COUNTY — When it comes to swimming, Oakland County programs have once again proved that it doesn’t get any faster than in their pools.


Just like last season, Birmingham Brother Rice, Birmingham Seaholm and Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook-Kingswood all won team state championships March 13-14.


Of the 36 individual events across all three state divisions, swimmers from Oakland County won 15 of them.

Wayne State University's men's and women's tennis programs are scheduled to host a Make-A-Wish fundraising event March 21 at the Peachtree Tennis Club in Clinton Township.

The event will feauture games and is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.

Wayne State men's head tennis coach Bryan Morrow was quoted in a release.

"We are excited to host an event where 100 percent of the proceeds go to Make-A-Wish Foundation. I want to thank Peachtree Tennis Club for hosting this event. We are looking forward to a fun night."

STERLING HEIGHTS — The young roster of Chippewa Valley’s girls bowling team got a taste of competing among the state’s best at the MHSAA Division 1 team state finals on March 6.


The Big Reds were in contention to qualify for the quarterfinals after eight baker games, but finished in ninth place, 39 pins away from qualifying.

Regional tournaments took place Feb. 27-28 at various sites. The top three teams at each regional advanced to the state finals. The top 10 individuals at each regional also punched their ticket to the state finals.

STERLING HEIGHTS — Mike Pollack and Bob Frink have been coaching Utica Eisenhower’s girls and boys bowling teams for a combined 38 years.

At the MHSAA Division 1 team state finals on March 6, both coaches saw their teams accomplish a feat they have never reached in their careers at Eisenhower.

On the girls side, Eisenhower advanced to its first state semifinal match under Pollack, while Frink’s side advanced to the quarterfinals for the first time.

METRO DETROIT — Several local bowlers and teams took home some shiny new hardware this past weekend as the high school season came to a close with the MHSAA state championships.

Macomb Dakota’s girls won the Division 1 team crown at Sunnybrook Lanes in Sterling Heights, while Warren Lincoln sophomore Tyler Kolassa won the D-3 boys singles title at Airport Lanes in Jackson.

Other highlights included Macomb L’Anse Creuse North junior Kyle Hayes finishing runner-up in the D-1 boys singles competition.

For West Bloomfield High boys golf coach Tommy Keegan, this is as good as it gets.

He’s in his first year leading the varsity program after spending the last two seasons as the JV coach.

“The fun thing is, being in the program for three years and having the ability to coach these guys in the past, they take criticism well and understand what I expect from them. It’s a lot of fun working with these guys. They’re like sons to me, if I’m even old enough to say that,” Keegan said with a laugh.

RAY TOWNSHIP — The Anchor Bay boys golf team won the 30th annual Evans-Gill Memorial Golf Tournament by besting two-time defending champion Utica Eisenhower by six strokes. The tourney was held at Pine Valley in Ray Township April 22.

Anchor Bay notched a 326, while Eisenhower tallied a 332. Eisenhower won the tournament in 2012 and 2013.

Warren De La Salle (337) finished 11 shots off the lead and in third place. Utica Ford and Macomb Dakota, which both finished with scores of 340, ended 14 shots off the pace and tied for fourth place.

For three years in a row, Rochester Hills native and gymnast Alyssa Shermetaro sustained injuries that kept her out for months at a time.

Aside from dealing with those injuries, Shermetaro said she trains approximately 19 hours per week during the school year and 25 in the summer.

And while Shermetaro may have had some ‘why am I doing this?’ moments along the way, she was rewarded for all the time, effort and perseverance with a full-ride scholarship to the University of Washington.

GROSSE POINTE FARMS — Going into her final hole at the state championship, Lily Pendy wasn’t aware that she had a six shot lead on the rest of the field.

It turned out that this may have worked in her favor, as she made par on the final hole at Forest Akers West to become top individual medalist at the state finals.

Pendy shot rounds of a 74 and 76 over the two-day tournament to lead Grosse Pointe South to a fourth-place finish in team competition.

EAST LANSING — Grosse Pointe South’s Lily Pendy won the top medalist title at the MHSAA Division 1 state finals held this past weekend at Forest Akers West in East Lansing.

Shooting scores of 74 and 76 in the two-day competition, Pendy’s cumulative score of 150 was six strokes better than her closest competitor. Her first-place finish helped South take fourth place in team competition with a score of 726 for the weekend.

“She scrambled to get up and down when she had to. She really played fantastic golf,” South coach Mike Rennell said.

GROSSE POINTE — MHSAA Tennis regionals were held last Thursday and Friday throughout Michigan, and Grosse Pointe North, Grosse Pointe South and University all qualified for their respective state finals. North and South each took home second-place finishes, while the Knights won their regional.

South
At the Division 1 regional held at Elworthy Park on Thursday, South finished with 24 points, four behind Troy High, but its second-place finish qualifies it for the state finals.

At the Macomb County Championships on Oct. 12, Sterling Heights Stevenson used top-five finishes from Samantha Hanson and Allison Shannon to claim the girls team title with 78 points.

Gina Patterson, from Lutheran North, won the girls race with a time of 18 minutes, 45 seconds.

“I’m very happy with my time. It was a good time, and I was just blessed to be able to keep running a strong time with this kind of competition and this kind of course, so it was good,” Patterson said.

ST. CLAIR SHORES — The tennis programs at St. Clair Shores Lakeview are making quite a name for themselves.

The girls team has won the last two Macomb Area Conference Gold Division titles, and the Huskies’ boys tennis squad gave Lakeview a clean sweep for the calendar year, as it went undefeated in MAC Gold play to capture the boys team’s first division title since 2007.

Lakeview also bested five other teams to win the MAC Gold division meet, which took place Oct. 1 at Warren Cousino and Sterling Heights High.

STERLING HEIGHTS — St. Clair Shores South Lake senior swimmer Krista Nannini is the elder statesman of the Cavaliers’ swim team.

Nannini, the team captain, is the lone senior in the group to return to a squad that won a Macomb Area Conference Silver Division title in 2012.

The team features just nine swimmers, first-year coach Amy Way said, including three from last year’s division champ.
