Madison Heights Lamphere’s girls swimming and diving program knows something about winning championships.

In 2014 and 2015, the Rams won Macomb Area Conference Silver Division dual and division meet titles. During the course of those two seasons, Lamphere went 9-0 in the Silver and 14-4 overall.

The Rams then moved up to the Gold last season, finishing 1-4 in the division and 2-8 overall.

This time around, Lamphere was 1-2 in the Gold and 4-3 overall, at press time.

The Rochester Hills Stoney Creek tennis coach watched her boys club secure the title Oct. 5. Serving as the event host, the Cougars posted 54 points, besting rival Rochester High by four to finish atop the Oakland Activities Association White Division.

If consistency is the benchmark for success, it might be hard to top what Grosse Pointe South’s girls cross country program has accomplished over the years.

South has qualified for the state finals 37 consecutive years, which coach Steve Zaranek said is the longest streak in the state.

To qualify for the state finals, a team has to finish in the top three at regionals.

South will have a chance to continue its streak when it hosts a regional Oct. 27 at Lake St. Clair Metropark.

CLINTON TOWNSHIP — Clinton Township Chippewa Valley’s boys tennis team won the program’s first dual meet championship in more than a decade with a 7-1 victory Sept. 21 against Fraser High in a Macomb Area Conference Blue Division.

Chippewa got victories from Matthew Miller (No. 1 singles), Michael Lulgjuraj (No. 2), Cooper Stevens (No. 4), Jacob Bobzin and Anthony Cardamone (No. 1 doubles), Andrew Dubon and Keegan Ratobylski (No. 2), Joey Bala and Matt Cheung (No. 3), and Will Bommarito and Cole Treece (No. 4).

The Macomb Lutheran North girls golf team continues to have a stranglehold on Macomb County golf, as the team won a fourth straight Macomb County Invitational championship.

The tournament took place Sept. 20 at Cherry Creek Golf Club in Shelby Township.

The Mustangs, who won a Division 4 state title last fall, tallied a 341 to get the win.

Utica Eisenhower was right on Lutheran North’s heels, taking second with a 345. Macomb Dakota was next with a 373.

In total, 12 teams competed in the invite.

FRASER — For three consecutive seasons, Fraser High’s boys tennis program has proven to be the best in the Macomb Area Conference Blue Division, with the Ramblers winning three dual meet championships and going 17-0-1 in division play during that time.

Although Fraser has graduated some talent, including former No. 1 singles player Adam Culver, the program still has some players capable of making it another successful year in the MAC Blue.

Cougars, Highlanders and Falcons each take their turn, meticulously contorting in the air to achieve various maneuvers. However, this is not a meet or a tournament; rather, it is a joint practice.

Grosse Pointe North girls golf coach Peter Kingsley knows what it is like to lead a program to the ultimate prize.

In 2011, Kingsley was the coach of a Grosse Pointe South team that won a state championship.

Kingsley is currently in that position with North. Last season, the Norsemen finished 0-6 in the Macomb Area Conference Red Division and didn’t make it past regionals.

At press time, North was 0-1 overall.

Ferndale High girls swim coach Drew Edson recently had two girls come in to give the sport a try.

After they had a tough go of it, Edson said he told them, “Swimming is one of the hardest sports you can do.”

And while that is not something everybody would enjoy hearing, it is a message that Edson indicated he wants to get out there.

Although Ferndale’s squad is made up of only about 10 girls, there’s more to the story than that.
