NOVI — Shoppers and staff at Twelve Oaks Mall, located at 27500 Novi Road in Novi, were forced to evacuate the building at around noon on New Year’s Eve after a smoke alarm was set off.
Novi firefighters were dispatched to the scene and found light smoke in the back room of a store located on the lower level, near the site of the former Lord & Taylor department store, said Novi police Cmdr. Jason Meier. According to Meier, it was determined that an employee had accidently set off the fire alarm as he was heating up bread. The alarm was reset, and the mall was reopened within approximately 30 minutes. No injuries were reported.
