SHELBY TOWNSHIP — Stevenson High School senior Andrew Bogusz, from Shelby Township, won the Must See Racing Bob Frey Classic Midwest Lights 30-lap feature event Aug. 19 at Lorain Raceway Park in South Amherst, Ohio.
After taking the lead early in the race and then fending off three restarts late in the race, Bogusz took the checkered flag. In second was Cody Gallogly, the Midwest Lights defending champion.
The Bob Frey Classic is one of the biggest events of the year for Must See Racing. The Jerry Caryer Memorial 40 was the headlining race, and the Midwest Lights feature was the undercard. Frey, originally from Elyria, Ohio, was a five-time Little 500 champion who got his start in 1972. Caryer was a regular Must See Racing competitor who passed away in 2020 the night before he was scheduled to compete at an event.
Bogusz said via email he really had to put in some work to get the win.
“I had to fight for it to win at a track that wasn’t in the state I live in. That win shows a comeback from what happened to us earlier in the year at Birch Run Speedway with a mechanical issue forcing us to withdraw the car from the event,” he said.
He said he would like to thank all those who made this win possible for him.
“(I) have to thank my dad for all his hard work giving me a very (good) car, Eddie Sachs for his guidance and all the sponsors who support my racing: Motor City Pawn Brokers, Lucido and Manzella attorneys at law, U. S. A. Plumbing, Leslie Tire Service, Pit Stop Graphics, Jax Wax of Michigan, RAM Engineering MIDWEST, DRIVEN racing oil, Ron Carter Autoland Fleet Group, Villa Penna Banquets, Superior Radiator, and Jomar Performance.”
Sachs, the principal owner at Eddie Sachs Racing and Driver Development, said Bogusz did a great job.
“For a track that Andrew does not like, he drove his butt off to get the win. Took the lead on lap 3 and checked out to a half track lead before a late race caution at lap 19 bunched the field. Held off the field on double file restart to cross the line 1st. Great effort by the driver and team,” he said via email.
