SHELBY TOWNSHIP — In a 30-lap sprint car race Oct. 1 in Sandusky, Ohio, 16-year-old Shelby Township resident Andrew Bogusz led for the majority of the race and picked up his second Maxima Racing Oils Must See Racing Midwest Lights feature win of the season.

It was the opening night of the Bev Jaycox Memorial Cavalcade at Sandusky Speedway. According to reports, on a restart on the fifth lap, Bogusz was in the outside lane racing series points leader Cody Gallogly, who was in the inside lane. Bogusz was able pass Gallogly and stay in the lead until the checkered flag. He won with a 2.922 second lead over Gallogly.

“I honestly thought he (Gallogly) was gonna get me on that restart. He’s got a way better car than we do. Mine is more of a dirt car than he has. I didn’t know I’d have that speed to carry me through the turns. I just sent it in, pinned him down and rocketed off. The car felt great the first half of the race. Towards the end the steering started getting stiff. I kept fighting. When I saw the white flag, I just let it play out and got the win,” Bogusz said in a press release.

Eddie Sachs, the owner of Eddie Sachs Racing — Driver Development, has been involved with Bogusz’s racing team for three years.

“Andrew’s driving ability has been a big eye opener to the other competitors. He is driving like a (seasoned) veteran of these pavement winged sprint cars,” Sachs said via email.

Terry Bogusz, Andrew Bogusz’s father and crew chief, said he helps prepare Andrew with the best resources he possibly can in hopes that his son can achieve his goals.

“I keep giving him the best prepared car I know how to and let his driving ability do the talking,” he said in an email.

Andrew Bogusz is a Manufacturing, Automation and Design Engineering student at Stevenson High School. This has been his first year racing in a sprint car since he moved up from karting and quarter midgets. On May 27, he won his first race in the series at Kalamazoo Speedway.

There is one more race on the series’ schedule, the Halloween Festival of Speed Oct. 15 at Lorain Raceway Park in Ohio.
