Buy a tree from the city
The Sterling Heights Department of Public Works is inviting residents to buy a tree for their home’s public right-of-way at a discount.

Residents may take advantage of this opportunity in May. They may choose from a variety of species and buy one for $225 instead of the usual $275 price tag. The purchased trees will be planted in the fall, likely in October or November, the city said.

Bocce fundraiser benefits Capuchins
The 11th annual Bocce with the Brothers fundraiser at Villa Penna in Sterling Heights reportedly raised $104,782 March 24. Organizers say all proceeds will support the Capuchin Ministries’ programs, which include offering food, clothing, after-school programming, substance abuse treatment and more to people in need.

“We couldn’t be more grateful to the community for coming out to celebrate and support such a deserving nonprofit that is near and dear to our hearts,” Michael Schodowski, the president of event sponsor Shelving.com, said in a statement. “This was our most successful Bocce with the Brothers yet, and we can’t wait to welcome everyone back next year to support the Capuchin Ministries.”

City to host SHINE neighborhood cleanup
Sterling Heights will have its spring SHINE Day May 7. Volunteers will rendezvous at First Church of Sterling Heights, 39400 Dequindre Road, at 9:30 a.m. before learning which residential yards they’ll be sprucing up.

Yards belong to residents who face challenges to doing the work by themselves.

“These are seniors and other individuals throughout the community that have mobility limitations and so on and are not able to do it themselves,” City Manager Mark Vanderpool explained during the March 21 City Council meeting. “So we have a group of volunteers, our volunteer corps, that goes out and cleans up 20, 30 homes.”
