Library bake sale
MADISON HEIGHTS — The Madison Heights Public Library will host a holiday bake sale, organized by the Friends of the Madison Heights Public Library, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 27.

The library is located at 240 W. 13 Mile Road. The sale coincides with the city’s Holiday Tree Lighting, with proceeds benefiting the library. There are no set prices — just donate what you wish. Both cash and PayPal will be accepted. Bakers are needed, and can donate baked goods as part of the sale.

Honoring fallen first responders
HAZEL PARK — The 20th annual Project Blue Light ceremony, honoring police officers and firefighters who gave their lives, will take place starting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 5 at St. Justin Church, located at 1600 E. Evelyn Ave. in Hazel Park.

All are welcome. Members of the community are also invited to place a blue or red light in the front window of their home to show support for first responders during the winter season.

 

DIY yule logs
MADISON HEIGHTS — Attendees can learn about the history of the festive centerpiece known as the yule log, and make one for themselves, during a special program at the Red Oaks Nature Center from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. on Dec. 2.

The nature center is located in Suarez Friendship Woods at 30300 Hales St. in Madison Heights. Supplies are provided, but attendees are encouraged to bring a glue gun if they have one. The event costs $5 per person. Preregistration with payment is required by calling (248) 585-0100 during nature center hours or (248) 858-0916 during weekdays.   

 

Volunteers sought to give others a merrier Christmas
METRO DETROIT — The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit is seeking volunteer bell ringers for the 2023 Red Kettle Christmas Campaign. Shifts are available in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb Counties.

Individuals and families can sign up for two-hour sessions in person at a red kettle site, or participate in a virtual bell ringing shift from home online. To register, visit registertoring.com.  Virtual bell ringers can sign up and begin raising funds at any time. The traditional bell ringing begins Nov. 10 and runs through Christmas Eve, excluding Thanksgiving and Sundays.

The Salvation Army provides after-school programs, food, shelter, emergency disaster services, substance abuse treatment and free legal aid for families and individuals throughout metro Detroit. Donations from the red kettle campaign help fund those programs.
