TROY — The Shir Tikvah Congregation in Troy is inviting the public to join them for its “Taste of Judaism” program to help introduce — or reintroduce — people to Judaism and its culture.

The organizers described Taste of Judaism as a great program for anyone who is curious about Judaism, including interfaith partners, spiritual seekers, Jews who are interested in reconnecting with Judaism or who want a refresher, individuals considering conversion, and individuals who are exploring Jewish family heritage. No prior knowledge or experience is required.

“It’s for anybody who’s interested in learning about Judaism. It’s sort of a ‘beginner class’ for Judaism, but we didn’t want to call it that,” said Congregation Shir Tikvah Executive Director Tessa Goldberg. “It’s got a lot of information about Jewish customs, traditions, food and so forth. … If you have questions about Judaism, this is a great place to start.”

The four-part program will be offered from 7-8:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 8, Tuesday, Jan. 16, Monday, Jan. 22 and Monday, Jan. 29, 2024, at Congregation Shir Tikvah, 3900 Northfield Parkway, in Troy.

It will be hosted by Rabbi Alicia Harris.

“This is the first year we have done Taste of Judaism,” said Goldberg. “Our synagogue attracts a lot of interfaith families and converts to Judaism. Our rabbi wanted to run an introduction to Judaism. It’s sponsored by the Union for Reform Judaism.”

Those interested in registering or who have questions can call (248)-649-4418 or go to www.shirtikvah.org. There is no enrollment fee, but pre-registration is requested. Registration closes Sunday, Jan. 7, 2024.

“It’s an informal group,” said Goldberg. “There is pre-registration required. It closes the day before the first class. It’s a lecture format but with lots of opportunities for questions and interaction. … We welcome in anyone who would like to talk or ask questions.”
