Farmington Hills resident charged in shooting

FARMINGTON — A Farmington Hills resident is facing criminal charges following a shooting that took place on Slocum Street in Farmington Nov. 1.

The shooting occurred on Tuesday, Nov. 1, at approximately 8:15 a.m.

Farmington Public Safety detectives, along with members of the Detroit Fugitive Apprehension Team, arrested Matthew Miquel Jones, a 40-year-old resident of Farmington Hills, Nov. 4.

Jones was charged by the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office with assault with intent to murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a felon.

According to a press release from the city of Farmington, Farmington Public Safety officers were dispatched to 33230 Slocum St. for a report of malicious destruction of property.

The reporting party believed that a tire on his pickup truck had been intentionally slashed.

After hanging up with dispatch, the reporting individual called back four minutes later and informed dispatch that he had been shot, the release states.

Responding officers arrived within two minutes and found the victim lying next to his truck.

Officers gave first-aid to the victim, who was transported to Beaumont Hospital-Farmington Hills by Superior EMS.

The victim was listed in critical condition following the shooting. At press time, he was reported to be in serious but stable condition.

“Although the investigation is ongoing and fluid, it is clear after reviewing the preliminary evidence that the victim of the shooting was targeted,” Farmington Public Safety Department Director Ted Warthman stated via the release.

Jones was arraigned in front of Magistrate Michael Sawicky of the 47th District Court in Farmington Hills Nov. 5.

A plea of not guilty was entered on his behalf, and a bond of $1 million cash/surety was given.

Jones is being represented by attorney Ellen K. Michaels.

“He’s wrongfully accused, and we intend to prove that in court,” Michaels said.

Jones was scheduled for a pre-exam conference Nov. 16. His next hearing is scheduled for Dec. 9 for an in-person exam.

A photo has been released of a Ford Fusion with heavily tinted side and rear windows, and the Farmington Public Safety Department is seeking help from the public to determine “the relationship between Matthew Miquel Jones and the pictured Ford Fusion.”

The license plate was removed on the date of the incident, according to the release.
