SOUTHFIELD — A 20-year-old Southfield man arrested in connection with a suspicious incident Jan. 19 was found to be wearing handcuffs on one of his wrists and was in possession of a steak knife, a gold badge resembling that of a police officer and latex gloves.
Police said a resident of the 21000 block of Stahelin reported that after returning home and parking her car in the garage at 12:15 p.m., she closed the garage door and when it was nearly down, she observed a pair of legs walking in front of the door as if the individual was bending down and trying to get into the garage.
Fearing she could be the victim of a robbery or attack, she ran inside and called police.
Police located the suspect a short time later in the 22000 block of Greenview, not far from the woman’s home.
“Officers noticed that the subject had handcuffs on one of his wrists and officers smelled the odor of alcohol on the subject’s breath,” said Southfield Police Lt. Nick Loussia, listing off the other items that were found on his person. “The subject also had a change of clothes in a backpack that he was carrying. (He) advised officers that while at his father’s house in Detroit, his brother had Tasered him and handcuffed him.”
The man may have mental health issues, Loussia said.
He was placed under arrest, and the incident is still under investigation.
“Local police agencies have been notified about the incident to determine if they have had similar incidents or to see if the subject escaped from custody,” Loussia said.
