Rumored Bashara murder accomplice gets court-appointed attorney

She may not be quite as well known as David Griem, Bob Bashara’s attorney, but Detroit lawyer Susan F. Reed — the court-appointed attorney for Joseph Gentz — is a seasoned legal professional in her own right.
Gentz is the man who turned himself into Grosse Pointe Park Public Safety Jan. 31, allegedly telling police that Bashara forced him to strangle his wife, Jane Bashara, on Jan. 24. After three days of questioning, Gentz was released Feb. 3. At press time, he had not been charged with anything, in spite of his reported admission of involvement in the killing.
Reed, who has her own sole-practitioner law firm in Detroit, said she has been practicing law for the last 30 years. The Wayne State University graduate has represented defendants in other high-profile cases, including Jason Gibson, the man charged with and eventually convicted of killing Detroit Police Sgt. Brian Huff, and Peter Dabish, who was convicted in the murder of Diana De Mayo in Detroit.
She said she was appointed to represent Gentz on Feb. 3, but said she couldn’t comment on the case or her client, including where he was now living and whether he had been threatened. Reed also said she couldn’t comment on media reports that police may have violated Gentz’s Miranda rights while he was in custody.
