CENTER LINE — With the city’s annual audit behind them, Center Line’s new treasurer can get down to the business of helping the staff draft the budget for the coming year.
It won’t be an easy task, but Mayor David Hanselman said he believes the city found the right guy to oversee the books when they hired Steve Adair as treasurer last December.
“He’s hit the ground running, as they say. He’s got the background,” Hanselman said. “He had the opportunity to go through the audit process with us. Since that’s the field he came out of, he had some nice suggestions, which was nice to hear. When you can have somebody, especially come out of that background, we know what to look for. I’m pleased with that.”
Adair’s hiring came about three months after the Center Line City Council unanimously voted to part ways with the city’s previous treasurer, William Barnett.
The city advertised for the position through the Michigan Municipal League and interviewed about a dozen candidates. Adair made the final cut.
“We interviewed him, and the council could see that this young man was right there, was just want we were looking for,” Hanselman said. “It just worked out perfectly.”
While he doesn’t hail from the city, Adair said he’s pleased to be able to work in a town he feels connected to, through his relationships with people from Center Line.
He said the learning curve on the job thus far hadn’t been as tough as he feared, and he was pleased to have been selected for the position.
“It seemed like a perfect fit for me, and for the city,” Adair said.
Hanselman said Adair’s hiring late last year filled one of two big administrative holes for Center Line. The mayor said hoped the city was in the final stage of the hiring he process for the remaining key job. He hoped to welcome a new public safety director this week.
