For one, a great season came to an end.

For the other, just three wins separate a great season from a championship one.

The baseball playoffs rolled on last weekend as Royal Oak Shrine and Royal Oak High each took part in their regional rounds.

For the Ravens, in the Division 1 bracket, eventual regional champ Rochester High was the better team June 10 at Clarkston High, knocking Royal Oak out with an 8-1 victory.

SOUTHFIELD — This was a group of guys who had never played baseball together before, who spent the better part of the early portions of their first season practicing in a gym, and who through the first 15 games had won just four times.

Despite all that, Southfield A&T baseball coach Darren Mosley had nothing but praise for his squad now that the season has officially come to a close.

“This was a big year for us,” Mosley said a day after falling to host University of Detroit Jesuit 14-2 in a Division 1 district final June 3.

ROYAL OAK — There’s dominance and then there’s what the Royal Oak Shrine baseball team did last weekend at the Allen Park Inter-City Baptist Division 4 district.

Eleven innings.

That’s all the Knights needed to roll to the regional round.

“Can’t complain about that too much,” coach Dan Noble said. “I thought we played very well. We hit well and pitched well, which you want to do. I think we took advantage of some matchups.”

FARMINGTON HILLS — District time can be one of elation if a regional-round ticket awaits.

But for local baseball, softball and soccer teams, district time proved to be the end of the 2017 athletic calendar.

Except for the Farmington Hills Mercy softball squad.

“For us to get through was great,” Marlins coach Alec Lesko said. “We’re young in the circle and in other spots, and anything can happen when you have that youth. For us, we’re so happy to get through here.”

WEST BLOOMFIELD — While most teams in the baseball and softball state playoffs had to wait for the weekend to get the postseason rolling, the West Bloomfield High baseball squad officially got going May 30 in pre-district action.

And for Eric Pierce and his Lakers, the beginning of the tourney also signaled the end.

“This was one of those games where we liked our chances,” Pierce said. “We came out and hit the ball hard, but we had too many opportunities go by, and we made a few too many mistakes.”

ORCHARD LAKE — It can be a cliché of sorts, whereby players and coaches alike look at the start of the postseason as a sort of restart to the entire year itself.

For Matt Petry and his Orchard Lake St. Mary’s baseball team, well, they’re embracing the cliché.

“Once we missed out on the (Catholic League) playoffs, we talked about a fresh start,” Petry said. “We talked about starting the season over and moving forward.”
