BIRMINGHAM — It’s not quite 162 games like in Major League Baseball, but Birmingham Groves baseball coach Shawn Morrison knows his team is in for a long season. The Falcons were two games into a 38-game season and were 2-0 overall at press time. They hadn’t played a game yet in the Oakland Activities Association White Division.

UTICA — Not happy with the results, but excited for league play. That’s how Utica High baseball coach Mark Moehlig described the Chieftains’ start to the season. At press time, Utica was 1-4 overall, with the lone win coming over Roseville High. In the first game of the season, the Chieftains lost to Macomb Dakota, which is currently undefeated and playing in the Macomb Area Conference Red Division.

GROSSE POINTES –– The Grosse Pointe North baseball program is entering a new era on the diamond. Longtime coach Frank Sumbera is no longer managing in the Norsemen dugout. Sumbera finished with the program with 1,097 wins, which ranks third all-time in Michigan High School Athletic Association history.

BERKLEY — Berkley High baseball coach Matt Rawlik said there are a lot of people in the community who want to see the program succeed. Given his ties to the program, doing so would also mean something special to him. Rawlik is a 2004 Berkley graduate, and aside from being part of the program himself, his dad, uncle and brother also suited up for Berkley.
