Last season’s record: 0-9

League: Charter School Conference

Returning starters: Seven

First game: 4 p.m. Aug. 30 vs. Detroit Public Safety Academy at Hazel Park High

Offensive keys:
After struggling to score points in 2018, Bradford is looking to be more explosive this year.

The Bulldogs scored 28 points all of last season. Coach Dion Alexander sees the potential in his team to increase that number.

“Offensively, we’re going to be an up-tempo, spread, power team with a good offensive line and multiple weapons to choose from to put points on the board,” Alexander said.

A few players to look out for on offense are quarterback Antonio Lyles, running backs Marcus Franklin and Jordan Durant, and receiver Quan Jones.

Defensive keys:
On the defensive side of the ball, Alexander is looking at his front four to be a force.

Bradford allowed its opponents to score 331 points last season, which was the third-highest total in program history.

“Defensively, we’ll have team speed and one of the toughest front fours to deal with. I saw this team last year; it’s a complete turnaround,” Alexander said.

Lyles (linebacker), Franklin (linebacker), Jones (defensive back) and Durant (defensive back) will also play key roles on defense.

Coach’s outlook:
Bradford has made the playoffs one time in its history (2016), but Alexander has high hopes for the 2019 Bulldogs.

“Our goal is to compete for the Charter School Conference championship and make the state playoffs,” Alexander said. “I was the defensive coordinator for Bradford Academy when the school experienced its first-ever state playoff appearance. … This team has that same potential.”
