METRO DETROIT — Several local bowlers and teams took home some shiny new hardware this past weekend as the high school season came to a close with the MHSAA state championships.

Macomb Dakota’s girls won the Division 1 team crown at Sunnybrook Lanes in Sterling Heights, while Warren Lincoln sophomore Tyler Kolassa won the D-3 boys singles title at Airport Lanes in Jackson.

Other highlights included Macomb L’Anse Creuse North junior Kyle Hayes finishing runner-up in the D-1 boys singles competition.

STERLING HEIGHTS — Macomb Dakota bowlers finished the season strong at the Feb. 28 and March 1 MHSAA Division 1 team and individual state finals at Sunnybrook Lanes in Sterling Heights.

The Cougars girls team reached the semifinals before being knocked out by eventual and now three-time defending state champion Davison High.

Dakota senior Nicole Mikaelian and junior Justin Taylor also advanced to their respective semifinals in the individual competition the next day, falling just short of the finals.

ROCHESTER — Farmington Hills Mercy reclaimed its throne at the MHSAA Division 1 girls swimming and diving state finals Nov. 23 at Oakland University.

Mercy, which won five straight state titles from 2007-11 before finishing in second place last year, scored 271 points at this year’s finals en route to reclaiming another crown.

“We all worked together on this,” Mercy junior Roxy Griffore said. “We had a really great team, and we worked really hard.”

Local basketball teams like to take advantage of the holiday break to get in some games against competition they might not normally have the opportunity to face during the school year in the form of tournaments and showcases.

Warren De La Salle’s team will take a trip to the west side of the state for a two-day tournament Dec. 27-28. Their possible opponents are Lowell, Greenville and host Grand Rapids Catholic Central.

Pilots coach Greg Esler called the host Cougars “one of the best teams in the state.”

A new era has dawned for Utica Eisenhower’s girls basketball program.

The Eagles, featuring almost an entirely new core of players from last year, are led by a new coach — Mike Satawa.

“We have eight seniors on the team, but only two of them have varsity game experience as starters, with two of the other seniors playing about six minutes a game last season,” Satawa said. “So we are a team with 12 out of 14 girls who haven’t played key minutes in varsity games. So it is a learning experience for all members of the program.

Fresh off his second season playing for the Columbus Crew of Major League Soccer, Justin Meram knows he wouldn’t be where he is today without his educational and athletic background as an alumnus of Utica Community Schools.

That’s why the Utica Eisenhower High School graduate will be spending his holidays in his hometown, giving back to the community in the form of a pair of weekend youth soccer camps, proceeds from which will be donated UCS athletics.

In hockey, like in other sports, reactions and adjustments play a major role, as far as long-term success.

And if the early returns are any indication, Utica High’s hockey team is in for a strong season.

The Chieftains dropped their season opener 2-1 against Auburn Hills Avondale Nov. 14 in a non-league game, leading coach Matt Burke to rearrange a few things, like the team’s lines, heading into their next game.

The changes paid off immediately.

Locally, Center Line High’s Andrea Okuly took third in the 100-yard backstroke and Warren Regina’s Alla Kedzierski placed sixth in the 100 breaststroke at the Division 3 final at Eastern Michigan University.

Looking to reclaim her state champion crown, Allie Murphy went to work, as the diving competition began at the Nov. 17 Division 2 girls swimming and diving state finals at Oakland University.

The Walled Lake Western senior put on an impressive performance, even overcoming an early mishap, as she struck the board with her feet on one of her early attempts during the finals.

“I got really nervous,” Murphy said.

But she bounced back quickly, eventually finishing in first place and breaking the state record in the process.

ROCHESTER — Rochester Adams and Pontiac Notre Dame Prep’s girls swimming and diving teams finished the year in fine fashion, placing among the top 10 teams at the Nov. 17 state finals with several All-State performances.

Adams ended up sixth in Division 2 at Oakland University, while Prep tied for 10th in Division 3 at Eastern Michigan University.

Utica Eisenhower’s Meghan Kennelly was recently named the Macomb Area Conference Blue Division volleyball MVP.

The senior said she was “surprised” and “happy” to win the award, and she credited her teammates for her success.

“Winning is a team effort. Sometimes I would have a bad game, and everyone else would step up,” she said. “We’d come together and support each other.”
