UTICA — Utica’s Weekend Unwind has returned once again for its third year of fun and live music.

On Fridays from 7 to 10 p.m. through Sept. 13, the Weekend Unwind will take place at Jacqueline K. Noonan Riverwalk Park/Memorial Park, 7530 Auburn Road, next to the Utica Public Library in downtown Utica. The first night of free, live music took place June 7.

Utica Mayor Thom Dionne said that the event was popular in previous years, and this year will have some new bands added to the lineup.

“It’s a really great event, and residents really enjoy it and businesses enjoy being part of it too. We pushed it back to 7 p.m. this year, and it goes until 10 p.m. so that people can continue their party downtown after if they would like. We have three new bands this year and a bunch of returning bands. Also, the park has a lot of new upgrades for the memorial we put in recently,” he said.

“We invite the residents to come out, bring their cooler, chairs and some friends, and have a good time,” Dionne said.

Each event features a band that plays music throughout the night while attendees relax and have fun together.

The next event will be held June 14 and will feature Matt Hamann from the Hideaways, who will also play again Sept. 6. They are a trio that performs classic rock, pop, country and blues.

There will be at least seven different bands, and many bands will play twice during the summer.

During the month of June, the event will include Bob Monteleone from Acoustic Madness June 21 and the Lucas Rhoades Band June 28.

The concert series is sponsored by the Utica Downtown Development Authority.

Gus Calandrino, who is on the Utica City Council and the Utica Downtown Development Authority, said the event has brought the community together.

“The Weekend Unwind concerts have become very popular. They give neighbors a chance to gather and get to know each other better. I believe this concert series has really helped promote a sense of community in our city. I encourage all Utica residents to come down and enjoy themselves and meet their neighbors,” he said in an email.

He said the bands are of high quality and the event is a great way to start the weekend off after a long week.

“Sitting in beautiful Memorial Park, listening to good music with great company is the perfect way to begin the weekend,” Calandrino said.

The city also recently upgraded the park where the event is held and added pavers, landscaping, benches and more to Memorial Park.
