SHELBY TOWNSHIP/UTICA — Shelby Township is in the process of holding a Halloween pet costume contest and is inviting the community to join in to decide which pet entered in the contest has the most interesting and adorable Halloween pet costume.

This is the first pet costume contest that the Shelby Township Parks, Recreation and Maintenance Department is hosting, and staff is looking forward to seeing who the community thinks should win the grand prize.

Pictures of the pets in their costumes that have been entered are posted on the voting page at www.shelbytwp.org/contests.

Voting began Oct. 19. On Oct. 29, voting will end at 4 p.m., and a winner will be announced Oct. 30.

One lucky winner will win a one-year pass to the brand new Pioneer Dog Park in Utica and a customized Yeti dog bowl with their pet’s name on it.

The winner will need to have proof of vaccinations and registration for their pet with Macomb County Animal Control for dog park entry.

Jessica Thomas, administrative program assistant with the Shelby Township Parks, Recreation and Maintenance Department, said last week that the contest already had a few creative pet costume submissions.

“We have six very cute submissions for the contest. We thought it would be fun to include Shelby Township K9 friends in a Halloween contest this year. We encourage everyone to go online and vote at www.shelbytwp.org/contests,” said Thomas.

Mike Adams, sports/recreation coordinator at the department, said they decided to do the contest this year and hope to be able to do it again next year.

“We know people love their pets, and Halloween is becoming more and more popular. We thought it would be a good idea to include pets this year in a costume contest. We are hoping to run this next year,” he said.
