METRO DETROIT — With the new school year approaching, that means homecoming season will soon arrive.

FARMINGTON — A Farmington Public Schools special education teacher was recognized this year by the Council for Exceptional Children for her work on behalf of children and youth with disabilities and/or gifts and talents, according to a district press release.

WARREN — Eighteen-year-old Blake Lyons found an artistic way to pay tribute to his grandfather Robert James Lyons, who died in November 2021.

BIRMINGHAM — This year, staff and administrators at Birmingham Public Schools spent part of their summer preparing for the upcoming year through a leadership planning event.

MADISON HEIGHTS — The city of Madison Heights is working with its two school districts to install police officers at each campus who will provide an extra layer of security for students and staff.

SOUTHFIELD —  A capital facilities bond has been proposed for the Southfield Public Schools that aims to right-size the district by closing and demolishing underutilized sites, while improving facilities and programming at the buildings that remain.

NOVI — After nearly two years without a playground, children at Village Oaks Elementary School, 23333 Willowbrook Drive in Novi, will have a playground to use sometime this fall, according to an announcement from Novi Community School District Superintendent Ben Mainka.

CENTER LINE/WARREN — In November 2017, Center Line Public Schools passed a $53.95 million bond issue, and since that time construction crews have worked on a number of districtwide building updates and technological improvements.

MADISON HEIGHTS — The principal of Madison High School is now handling double duty as the interim superintendent of the Madison District Public Schools, splitting her time between the roles.

NOVI — The Novi Community School District Board of Education approved a contract with Ben Mainka to serve as district superintendent during the board’s regular meeting July 14.

FERNDALE — A Ferndale-based tech company will be giving away 10 firearm detection devices to school districts.

METRO DETROIT — School districts statewide will receive more in per-pupil funding during the 2022-2023 school year.

WARREN — Even though the calendar reads July, Briarwood Elementary School and Enterprise High School have been welcoming students to class in Warren Woods Public Schools this summer.

WEST BLOOMFIELD — Over the course of the past seven months, West Bloomfield resident Adedoyin Adebayo has graduated from both high school and college and has been accepted into Harvard University.

MADISON HEIGHTS — Albert Morrison, the former board president of the Madison District Public Schools, who in April was indicted on federal charges of tax evasion and failure to file tax returns, now faces an additional charge of conspiracy to commit bribery.

CLAWSON/ROYAL OAK — Come fall, students will see three new administrators in the Clawson and Royal Oak public school districts.

EASTPOINTE — Eastpointe Community Schools has entered into a partnership with Northern Michigan University to provide a pathway to teaching certification for district staff members.
