ROSEVILLE — Fathers and sons in the Roseville area are getting ready to lock and load. The Recreation Authority of Roseville and Eastpointe will be hosting a Father-Son Nerf War.

The event is designed for fathers and sons ages 4-17. It will take place 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, July 15, at Veterans Memorial Park in Roseville, 27325 Barkman St. The cost to attend is $20 per Roseville resident and $25 per nonresident.

“This is the first time RARE has hosted an event for fathers and sons,” RARE Assistant Director Sarah Frederick said in an email. “We now host annual events for mothers/daughters, fathers/daughters and mothers/sons. Nerf guns are always a hit with kids (and adults, since most of us grew up with them). We thought this would be a fun and active activity for fathers and their sons. This event will sure bring out the kid in the dads!”

The event is made possible through Battle Zone Detroit, a business that offers Nerf gun battles complete with inflatable arenas, music and more.

“We should be arriving an hour early to set up. After (the battlegrounds) are inflated, we bring the guns, the music and the safety equipment. We have a team to run the battles. We have several rounds of people and will have 10-on-10 battles,” explained Battle Zone Detroit owner Aaron Gilbert. “There are always staff monitoring everyone and making sure they’re following the rules. People can’t be too aggressive or shoot people too close — that kind of thing.”

“They will be providing the inflatable battle zones, Nerf guns and ammo used for the evening, along with instruction from their provided staff for the mini tournament games,” added Frederick. “We will be having two separate battle zone arenas to group similar age groups together.”

Those interested can register online at RARE’s website.

“Families may register online at rare-mi.org or in person at the Recreation Authority Center, 18185 Sycamore, Roseville, MI,” Frederick wrote. “Preregistration is required. We are allowing a maximum of 40 participants for this event, to allow for ample game play.”

Gilbert started Battle Zone Detroit after realizing how people of all ages enjoy duking it out with the foam weapons.

“This is our third year,” he said. “Outside of me just loving Nerf guns, I used to work at Quicken Loans, and we loved playing with them. When they took them away from us, I realized how much I enjoyed them and it made me realize it could be a good business.”

Frederick said this is something new and exciting for RARE and something she thinks will be a big hit with local families.

“This event is a fun way to spend some time with your son and create fun memories all while reliving your childhood with Nerf Guns!” remarked Frederick.

Gilbert added that this is something people can’t really get anywhere else.

“Come experience something new,” said Gilbert. “For typical outdoor events, people know the bounce houses, the dunk tanks and so forth, but I think we’re the only mobile Nerf gun arena in Michigan.”
