GROSSE POINTE CITY/FARMS — Grosse Pointe Farms officials are again showing their support for work on Fisher Road that would be partially paid for with a state grant.

During a meeting by Zoom May 11, the Farms City Council voted unanimously in favor of applying jointly with Grosse Pointe City for a grant from the Michigan Department of Transportation to fix Fisher Road between Mack and Charlevoix avenues and between Kercheval and Charlevoix avenues. This is the third straight year the cities — who share Fisher — have applied for this competitive grant program, which is designed for roadwork in small municipalities.

“We’re hoping to make our application more attractive” by increasing the funding match by the City and Farms from 50% to 60%, Grosse Pointe City Manager Pete Dame said during an April 19 Grosse Pointe City Council meeting by Zoom.

The total estimated project cost is $812,200, with the City and Farms each offering to split the grant match by paying $243,660 apiece.

“The costs would be significantly” reduced for both cities if they could obtain the grant, Farms City Manager Shane Reeside said. In addition, he said the state funding would enable them to repair Fisher sooner than expected in the multiyear road repair schedule.

Farms Mayor Louis Theros said that being able to complete roadwork on the heavily traveled thoroughfare, which serves as the border between the City and the Farms, would be “fantastic.”

Reeside said city engineers are more confident than they’ve been before that the cities might finally receive the grant this year.

“I think (the odds of getting it) are better,” Reeside said. “The state is looking for multijurisdictional projects.”

Farms resident Andy Dervan, who lives on Fisher Road, is among the residents who’d like to see this project move forward. He said he hoped the Farms and City would be able to secure the grant this time around.

“It’s in rough shape,” Dervan said of Fisher.
