ROSEVILLE — A 30-year-old Detroit man is accused of assaulting an employee at a local store after police say he attempted to remove several items from the store without paying for them.

The incident in question took place at approximately 3:25 p.m. March 6 at the Walmart located at 28804 Gratiot Ave. in Roseville. According to police, the suspect, later identified as Ronald Doby, was shopping inside the store and utilized the self-scan checkout. On the way out of the store, Doby was asked to produce his receipt by a store employee, and the employee found that Doby had not paid for some of the merchandise, according to police.

The merchandise was recovered by the employee, and Doby appeared to be continuing to exit the store. However, Doby then allegedly turned around and assaulted the employee by throwing him to the ground and into a shopping cart, which caused a cut on the employee’s head, police said.

Police said Doby exited the store and left in a silver, older-model Chevrolet Impala. The employee, a 23-year-old Roseville man, reportedly was transported to the hospital and received treatment for his injuries.

Roseville police reported that Doby turned himself in March 17 and was arraigned March 18 in the 39th District Court. He was charged with one count of aggravated assault and one count of third-degree retail fraud. He was given a $1,000 personal bond, and his next court date is scheduled for 8:15 a.m. Wednesday, April 22.

Doby had not retained or been appointed an attorney prior to publication.
