ST. CLAIR SHORES — Trick-or-treating and Halloween fun returns to St. Clair Shores this month with the St. Clair Shores Activities Committee planning its annual Halloween Fun Fest Oct. 29 at Veterans Memorial Park.

With cider and doughnuts, trick-or-treating for children 12 and younger who are accompanied by an adult, music, hayrides, kiddie rides, a petting zoo and bounce houses, it’s something the committee spends nearly an entire year getting ready for local children.

Karl Schwarzwalder, chairman of the St. Clair Shores Activities Committee, said that the event runs 1-5 p.m. at the park, located at 32400 Jefferson Ave., although it opens early from noon to 1 p.m. for special-needs children and their families.

Presale wristbands cost $2 for residents at the St. Clair Shores Parks and Recreation Department, 20000 Stephens St., and $3 for nonresidents. At the event, entry will costs $3 for anyone who does not have a presale wristband. Getting a wristband ahead of time, Schwarzwalder said, avoids long lines at the gate. There is no charge for parking.

Schwarzwalder said that upwards of 60 or 70 vendors will be at the event passing out candy.

“At least for me, anyway, it’s more about seeing the happy faces and the smiles that people have,” he said. “The people that come, they’re very appreciative of it.”

“We expect another banner year,” said Mayor Kip Walby.

He said having the event back at Veterans Memorial Park is good because of the ample parking and how large the event has grown.

“We’re looking forward to another good year. We’re hoping for, obviously, good weather,” he said.

More holiday fun can be found at the library, where children of all ages can stop in between 2 and 4 p.m. Oct. 29 to create a Halloween craft and play some “fearfully fun games.” Children, accompanied by adults, can also go trick-or-treating at the library, so costumes are encouraged.

The Teen Advisory Board will host a Harry Potter Halloween party for teens in grades six and up 7-8:30 p.m. Oct. 30 at the library. The party will include a costume contest, games, Harry Potter-themed activities, snacks and small prizes. Registration is required by calling (586) 771-9020, ext. 3, or stopping by the library, 22500 E. 11 Mile Road.
