WARREN — Five people escaped serious injury Oct. 10 thanks to the quick actions of Warren police responding to what was being investigated at press time as a suspicious fire at a motel near Chicago Road and Van Dyke Avenue.

Warren Fire Commissioner Wilburt “Skip” McAdams said fire crews were summoned at 3:13 a.m. to a commercial fire at America’s Best Value Inn & Suites, where they were met by Warren police.

“Police were in the area. They arrived to find fire outside of the apartment, and the fire damaged two units,” McAdams said.

MADISON HEIGHTS — A motorist struck another driver and sent the other driver veering off the road and into a Madison Heights home, with the car catching fire but the driver escaping to safety, according to police.

Now the motorist who started the chain reaction is facing misdemeanor charges.

Chemical-infused or oily rags are being blamed for an early-morning house fire in  Sterling Heights, and the Sterling Heights Fire Department is instructing residents on the best way to dispose of those materials.

The blaze reportedly happened around 5:52 a.m. Sept. 24 in the 8800 block of Radner Drive, which is located by Clinton River Road and Canal Road. When firefighters from fire stations 1, 2 and 5 arrived at the scene, they reportedly discovered that the fire had already “vented through the roof,” according to the SHFD.

An explosion occurred Oct. 2, resulting in a subsequent fire, at a building on Hilton Road, according to the Ferndale Fire Department.

According to a press release, Ferndale dispatch received numerous 911 calls at approximately 2:52 p.m. about an explosion and fire at 3281 Hilton Road, which is a part of a small strip of businesses.

Fire crews used some special tools recently to crack a safe that had three children trapped inside.

According to the Sterling Heights Fire Department, fire crews were deployed to the 13000 block of Maidstone Court, near Schoenherr Road and Metropolitan Parkway, at around 5:30 p.m. Sept. 24. The rescue workers were sent to help three kids — two 4-year-olds and a 3-year-old — who became locked inside a newly delivered gun safe on accident, Fire Chief Chris Martin said.
