FERNDALE — The Ferndale Police Department has ruled out a previous suspect who it believed was responsible for dropping hundreds of screws into two city parking lots.

Sgt. Baron Brown said that police on Tuesday, Nov. 6, interviewed the suspect they had believed committed the act the previous week, and after the conversation, police ruled him out as the perpetrator who dropped the screws.

“We just interviewed him, and his statements and his demeanor and the totality of the things he told us, and the things he's done and the person that he is, leads us to believe that he is not our guy,” Brown said. “We’re happy to clear him and move on.”

Authorities on Oct. 29 discovered approximately 400 to 500 screws that had been dropped in the Ferndale police and 43rd District Court parking lots, which are located across from each other along Nine Mile Road, east of Woodward Avenue. A police scout car and vehicles belonging to a court employee and a woman visiting the court each suffered a flat tire from the screws.

Ferndale police released security camera footage of the former suspect Nov. 2, with Brown previously saying the man could be seen releasing the screws in a parking lot.

“In one of the videos, you can see him coincidentally, clearly, reach into his pocket, pull his hand out and it appears in a motion that could appear as though he was dropping things on the ground, and then put his hand back in his pocket,” Brown said of what made police believe the man was a suspect in the first place.

“It was right in the area where a number of screws were found, but it was just him coincidentally in a spot and conducting a movement with his body that really wasn’t what we thought it was,” Brown said.

Police are asking anyone with information on the true suspect’s identity to call the Ferndale Police Department at (248) 541-3650 or Crime Stoppers of Michigan at (800) 773-2587.
