CENTER LINE — It’s not always easy attending school every day.

Trouble concentrating in class, behavioral issues, peer pressure and relationship problems can often impact academics.

But with determination and help from others, students can better handle those challenges, and every year Center Line Public Schools recognizes such achievements. The district holds a Turn Around awards ceremony every spring to recognize students who have overcome situations to improve their academics and behaviors.

Teachers, counselors, principals and support staff who have noticed these positive changes can nominate students for the awards. While in the past the event was held in person at Center Line High School with a guest speaker, breakfast and family and staff present, this year’s Turn Around awards ceremony was presented via videoconferencing May 17. Because of COVID-19, students have been attending school either in a 100% virtual classroom, or in a hybrid program.

This year’s recipients are:
• Crothers Elementary School second grader Jocelyn Sides, nominated by Julia Carlesso.
• Peck Elementary School third grader Viola Bomberry, nominated by Kennedy Tkalcac.
• Roose Elementary School third grader Abdullah Islam, nominated by Laurenne McDougall.
• Roose Elementary School second grader Liliunna Leavatte, nominated by Corinna Fouts.
• Wolfe Middle School eighth grader Gabe Hourany, nominated by Shelley Krolewski.
• Wolfe Middle School eighth grader Kole Foney, nominated by Shelley Krolewski.
• Academy 21 student Damanni Spears, nominated by Jason Ratkowski and Kathy Koch.
• Center Line High School senior Andrew Kielbasa, nominated by Audrey Kary.
