ROYAL OAK — On Thursday, Aug. 15, Beaumont Health and WellStreet opened their 13th and largest urgent care facility at Woodward Corners, a development that includes retail, restaurants and a Meijer at 13 Mile Road and Woodward Avenue.

The 5,400-square-foot urgent care center, within walking distance from the hospital behind it, will reduce time and money spent at the hospital’s emergency room by offering care for minor injuries and illnesses.

Since Beaumont Health and WellStreet announced their partnership one year ago, they have opened 13 urgent care centers in the metro Detroit area, and their goal is to open 30 total. In the fall, another urgent care center in Royal Oak is scheduled to open in the former Superior Fish location, near 11 Mile and Main Street.

“Our goal is to provide high-quality, convenient, accessible and lower-cost options close to where people live and work in a place that is open 365 days a year to treat minor injuries and illnesses,” said Carolyn Wilson, chief operating officer for Beaumont Health.

Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, has the ninth-busiest emergency room in the country, she said, seeing up to 400 people a day and approximately 60,000 a year.

“In the emergency room, we treat based on severity, so patients (with lower priority issues) can wait hours,” Wilson said. “Here (at the urgent care centers), we can see people in and out in less than 50 minutes.”

So far, the new urgent care centers have seen more than 20,000 patients, Beaumont Urgent Care Director Dr. Bernice Sessa said.

“Beaumont Urgent Care is the most appropriate for low-acuity care, such as upper respiratory infections, influenza, cuts and bruises, broken bones, lab services and EKGs, as well as my most favorite, X-rays that are done and read by radiologists before they leave our clinic,” Sessa said.

The new facility includes eight exam rooms, two procedure rooms, a laboratory and an X-ray suite.

“Many consumers that visit our urgent care centers do not have a primary care doctor, and because urgent care is not a substitute for primary care, we want to help these patients tap into a large network of physicians and services,” said Carolyn Wilson, chief operating officer for Beaumont Health. “If a patient is already part of our Beaumont network, our urgent care staff and providers quickly access their electronic medical record.”

Jim Ray, regional vice president of WellStreet, said one of the important things Beaumont Health sought in choosing an urgent care operations partner was a company experienced with using the same electronic medical record system.

“I think it’s really smart of hospital systems to partner with companies that are experienced in operating different kinds of businesses,” Ray said. “Our goal for a large facility like this is to see close to 40 or more patients per day.”

The urgent care center in Woodward Corners will be open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week, including holidays and weekends. It is located at 3055 Woodward Ave.
