Oakland County’s best swimmers and divers set to meet
The Oakland County Boys Swimming and Diving Championships are Feb. 3-4 at Waterford Mott. The annual meet features some of the top talent in the state.

Many of the state’s fastest swimmers and talented divers will converge Feb. 3-4 at Waterford Mott in the Oakland County Boys Swimming and Diving Championships.

The meet annually pits some of the top swim programs against each other in the same pool. Birmingham Seaholm coach Tom Wyllie expects this year’s edition to be no different.

“The Oakland County meet is a very tough meet,” he said. “You have some of the top competition in the state concentrated in Oakland County, and the fact that all three (Michigan High School Athletic Association) divisions are represented makes it an especially tough meet. Add to that the fact that most teams are at the peak of the training, you will have a lot of very talented and very tired swimmers competing against one another. It should be very exciting to watch.”

The action starts with the diving competition at 6 p.m. Feb. 3. The swim races begin the next day at noon.

Last season, Seaholm won the event, keeping Birmingham Groves from winning its third straight title.

Oakland County routinely sends some of the strongest programs to the state finals. Last season, the county had seven of the top-10 schools across the three division finals, including a D-2 state title from Groves.

Wyllie believes Birmingham Brother Rice, Groves and his Seaholm squad will be battling it out for the top spot this year at the county.

The coach added that the meet also affords the swimmers a “great opportunity” to reach state-final qualifying times because they’re going up against stiffer competition.

“The Oakland County (meet) is definitely a yardstick against which we measure our progress, so it’s an important meet,” he said.

Tickets are $5 and available at the door.
