Mount Clemens has set a specific goal to win the MAC Gold Division this season, and it got started in the right direction in pursuit of that goal.
The Battling Bathers opened up league play Jan.10 with a 69-45 victory over Warren Mott.
“It’s always good to get a first league game,” said Mount Clemens coach Jason Monk. “You want to win that first game, because that just leads into other good things. It was important for us to come out and have a good showing, and I think we did that. I’m proud of the girls.”
The Marauders posed their share of problems for Mount Clemens.
Camisha Coleman and Ariell Young combined to score 23 points for Mott, and their effort helped to give the Marauders their first lead of the game in the third quarter.
But Mott wasn’t able to enjoy its lead for too long. After finding themselves down 32-30, the Bathers proceeded to go on consecutive runs and seized control of the game.
Sheyna Deans and Tiasia Duplessis led the charge for the Bathers. Deans finished with 30 points, while Duplessis chipped in 18.
“I was off at first, but coach gave me a good pep talk,” Deans said. “I got it together the second half.”
Mott coach Patrick Schmidt believes that his squad is a work in progress.
“I got a pretty young team, but I don’t like to use that as an excuse. We got to get better. Some of my starters got in foul trouble, and we just got to make shots.”
Next up for the Bathers is a home game against St. Clair Shores Lake Shore Jan. 12 at 7 p.m.; Mott next takes on Macomb L'Anse Creuse North at 7 p.m. Jan. 12 in a road game.
