Local golf squads, individuals qualify for state finals

The fields are set for the golf state championships, which will be played June 15-16 across the state.

Here’s a look at which local squads and individuals made it through the regional round and will take their shot at a state title.

In regionals, the top three teams and the top three individuals not on a qualifying team advance.

Division 1
Rochester High’s Eric Shyu was the top individual to qualify in his regional and now looks forward to the final June 15-16 at Grand Valley State University. The senior shot 72 June 7 at Boulder Pointe Golf Club in Oxford. Rochester Adams’ Brandon Barrows also made the cut, shooting 73 to nab the final qualifying spot as an individual.

Grosse Pointe South’s Geoff Welsher (74), Will Hyde (78), Joe Becker (74) and David Szymanski (79) led the squad to a regional title June 7 at The Orchards in Washington Township. The Blue Devils finished with 305, 10 strokes better than second-place U of D Jesuit and 11 shots ahead of Troy High.

Individually, Warren Cousino’s Max Livernois (75), St. Clair Shores Lakeview’s Tony Garbe (76) and Utica Eisenhower’s Michael Gaulin (77) also qualified.

Birmingham Brother Rice blitzed the field June 7 at Timber Trace Country Club in Pinckney.

The Warriors, led by Sean Friel (70), Jeremy Ball (76), Kyle Gaines (79) and Jeremy Glod (73) finished with a 298 team total.

Pinckney was second with 307 and Detroit Novi Catholic Central was third with 312.
Individually, North Farmington’s Austin Alexander shot 75 to qualify.

Division 2
Bloomfield Hills Andover is heading to the state final June 15-16 at Ferris State University. Kyle Petrovich (78), Brandon Steingold (81) Darren Weiss (78) and Adam Zureick (80) led the Barons to a 317 June 7 at Fieldstone Golf Club in Auburn Hills.

Auburn Hills Avondale was second with 323, and Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook-Kingswood tallied 327.

Individually, Bloomfield Hills Lahser’s Johnny Fortuna (73), Beverly Hills Detroit Country Day’s Rishi Patel (74) and Kyle Rybicki (77) qualified.

Division 3
Pontiac Notre Dame Prep was tops at the regional June 7 at Cracklewood Golf Club in Macomb Township and is heading to the final at Michigan State University.

Aaron Knutson (80), Tyler Jackson (77), Jack Peleman (77) and Joe Bonanni (91) led the Fighting Irish to a 325.

Macomb Lutheran North finished second with 334, and Lake Fenton High tallied 336.

Division 4
Auburn Hills Oakland Christian has a shot to defend its state title at Michigan State.

The Lancers — led by Zach Preuss (79), Tyler Coyne (86), John VanNoord (81) and Brandon Delekta (81) — shot 327 June 7 at Westwynd Golf Club in Oakland Township. Ann Arbor Green Hills and Rochester Hills Lutheran Northwest tied for second with 359.

Beverly Hills Detroit Country Day

Thanks to two early scores, some lock-down defense, and a touchdown with just 5:25 remaining in regulation, the Beverly Hills Detroit Country Day football team picked up a 20-13 victory against Milan High in a Division 4 regional final on Nov. 14 and earned this week’s Team of the Week honor. Country Day, which had outscored its opponents 78-7 in the district round, advanced to the state semifinals for the second year in a row. The Yellowjackets (11-1) face Flint Powers Catholic (10-2) at 1 p.m. Nov. 21 at West Bloomfield High.
