Saturday, Nov. 26, marked the second annual Small Business Saturday, a day dedicated to neighborhood shopping in an attempt to strengthen and refuel the economy.
“It is well-known that small business can and will play an important role in the economic redevelopment of this region,” said Paul Traub, an economist and Oakland Township resident. “The more the community pulls together, the better it is for everyone.”
Many small businesses are spreading their own cheer this December by offering incentives to encourage consumers to shop locally.
Ferndale resident and business owner Chad Hetzel of Salon Alliance is offering clients package deals on hair care products this month.
“It’s so nice to see everyone in good spirits and wanting to look their best for the season,” said Hetzel, who also helps support local businesses. “I try to give all my business to Ferndale this time of year and hope that will entice others to do the same.”
Frank Street Bakery opened in downtown Birmingham Dec. 1. Owners-operators Grace and Matt Dersa are keeping it local and are offering some sweet freebies and incentives.
“We look forward to serving our neighbors and friends in the community, as well. We love the idea of owning a small business where we live,” said Grace Dersa. “We proudly order our supplies directly from Grand Rapids, and we purchase all our ice cream from Ray’s (in Royal Oak). All our produce is purchased locally, so it is sure to be fresh. We love the idea of keeping the money moving in Michigan.”
The winter months are an exceptionally busy time at the Grosse Pointe Music Academy, and they are currently offering gift certificates for classes.
“Supporting local business is critical to the growth of a city, the state and entire country,” said Henry Bahrou, school director.
Travis Keck, manager of the Fitness 19 gym in Rochester, is currently offering enrollment specials and gift cards redeemable for personal training sessions or month-to-month fees. Keck said the gift of health is something anyone can benefit from.
“By giving the gift, you’re taking that first step for them (to join a gym) that they may not take on their own,” said Keck. “Whether it’s a tri-athlete or a stay-at-home mom, everyone should maintain and be conscious of their health.”
In December, Elements Therapeutic Massage in Troy will host a special discount day with freebies, live music, hors d’oeuvres, drinks, gift baskets and prizes. After the celebration, they will implement other package specials and membership gifting options.
“We recently moved a lot of our (out-of-state) business to Michigan, such as marketing signs, posters and staff apparel,” said Carol Glowczewski, owner of Elements in Troy.
La Vida Massage and Wellness Center of Bloomfield Hills is also offering special pricing through the season.
“We need the support in order to thrive and continue to provide products and services to our communities,” said owner Kelly Fowler. “It is crucial to support small businesses during the holiday season to aid in stimulating our severely depressed economy in Michigan.”
Tammy Crenshaw, owner of Fido Personal Dog Training in Ferndale, will be selling special gift baskets this holiday season.
“They can be filled by the customer or they can buy one already made up. Prices vary by what goes in the basket,” said Crenshaw. “We have a wonderful variety of dog training toys, treats, collars and leashes, bones and more.”
Paint Party Royal Oak is a studio that offers two-hour painting classes for both novice and experienced artists. They recently lowered prices on some evening classes and are selling gift cards for sessions. On Tuesday afternoons, they offer discounts for seniors and the unemployed.
“Many of the efforts currently being undertaken here in southeastern Michigan recognize the importance of entrepreneurship as an engine that can drive economic revitalization,” said Traub. “Shopping and spending at local businesses here in the region can only help to promote these efforts.”
