Senior living facility proposed in Macomb Township along 23 Mile

MACOMB TOWNSHIP — A St. Louis-based company is proposing to develop a $40 million assisted living facility in Macomb Township, an area that currently doesn’t have any senior living facilities.

Provision Living announced its intentions this month with the hope of building a 200,000-square-foot community just west of St. Isidore Church on 23 Mile Road near Romeo Plank Road.

Plans currently call for the facility to have 100 independent living units, 75 assisted living units and 30 memory care apartments. There will be a variety of unit options, including studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom units.

The facility plans also call for several amenities, including a beauty salon, exercise room, movie theater and dining room.

Dave Baylis, principal with Provision Living, said the company has been looking all over Michigan for locations, and a Macomb Township facility would be the fourth community in the state.

Baylis said the demographics in the area, including seniors and their adult children, who he said typically make the decisions about a senior living facility, matched what the company was looking for and the fact that it would fill a gap in the township.

“We basically get on the ground and get a feel for the neighborhood,” Baylis said. “I think there is a great opportunity to serve the seniors in that area as we feel it is underserved. There are facilities nearby doing a good job, but we think there could be more in Macomb Township.”

Macomb Township Planner Patrick Meagher said there are no senior living facilities in Macomb Township at this time, but there are several proposed, including one near the Hickory Hollow Golf Club on North Avenue south of 23 Mile Road.

Walnut Creek Living is the closest thing to a senior living facility in Macomb Township and is located a mile south of the proposed facility off of 22 Mile Road. But, the business is run in a private home and is not a multi-apartment facility.

Meagher said the land Provision Living is looking at does already have a special land use permit for a senior living facility, as another company was looking to do a similar project around 2012. Provision Living hasn’t submitted any plans to the township yet, but Meagher said the facility would fill a need in the township.

“The township is very interested in getting some senior housing in here,” Meagher said. “It seems like at this time there are a few potential ones looking to actively proceed, so this should be a good time for this type of development.”

Baylis said something else they look at when considering a location is the number of apartments and other living communities in the area, which again he said there is a pocket in Macomb Township.

Provision Living has the land under contract, Baylis said, so they are moving into site planning. He said they have not talked to anyone from St. Isidore Church yet, but once the plans get further along, they plan to connect with the church, the St. John Medical Center across the street and other neighbors.

“We are excited to be part of the community,” Baylis said. “We are dedicated to Michigan, and we want to work with the folks in Macomb Township.”

Provision Living hopes to have the development underway by the end of the year. The facility would create about 100 jobs, from healthcare professionals and administration to kitchen and other facility staff.

The company currently has a facility in Ann Arbor, and two other facilities under construction in West Bloomfield and Grand Rapids Township.
