EASTPOINTE — Police said cigarettes, cash, rolled pennies and scratch-off lottery tickets were taken during a robbery at the 7-Eleven store on 10 Mile Road east of Kelly Road early on Sept. 19.

Eastpointe Public Safety Director George Rouhib said the robbery took place at 4:48 a.m. when a man entered the store and grabbed a woman who was working there by the throat as she exited the restroom.

“He then began to reach into his right pocket, implying he had a gun,” Rouhib said. “He then ordered the other employee to the ground and went behind the counter and was stealing Newport cigarettes. He also stole cash and rolls of pennies from the register drawer.”

The suspect allegedly took scratch-off lottery tickets at that time, some of which were dropped as he fled on foot.

Rouhib said a K-9 team from the Sterling Heights Police Department arrived in an attempt to locate the suspect, but the track was lost.

Eastpointe police continued to examine evidence, including store video surveillance footage.

The employee who was grabbed by the throat sought medical assistance, but Rouhib said that she will be fine.

A possible suspect vehicle, described as a gray minivan of unknown make and model, was seen at the store about an hour before the robbery. Police believe the suspect may have arrived in the vehicle earlier to case the scene beforehand.

The suspect was described as an approximately 45-year-old Black man who stood 5 feet, 10 inches tall and who was wearing a gray hoodie, brown pants and a red scarf.
