OAKLAND TOWNSHIP — Oakland Township is the third safest community in America and the safest municipality in Michigan, according to SafeWise.com.

To identify the 100 safest cities in America for 2020, the home and security safety review company started by looking at cities with populations of more than 2,500 residents in 2018, analyzed FBI crime report statistics for each city and calculated the chance of such crimes occurring out of 1,000 people in each city.

Safewise.com calculated that people living in Oakland Township — a population of 19,495 — have a 0.2 in 1,000 chance of experiencing a violent crime and a 1.5 in 1,000 chance of experiencing a property crime.

Assistant Oakland Township Manager Jamie Moore said the township, which is 36 square miles, is typically high on the safest communities list.

“We are, historically, a very safe community,” she said. “So we’re very happy and not surprised at all to be named the third safest community in the nation.”

Oakland Township is patrolled by the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, which serves as the local police agency of record.

“Our team continues to shine, and everyone has worked incredibly hard during challenging times, especially amidst the current pandemic,” Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said in a statement. “I cannot say enough about the good work our deputies continue to do to ensure the safety of our residents.”

Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Oakland Township Substation Cmdr. Lt. Charles Bernard thanked Oakland Township for its “unwavering support.”

“Their support is why we’re the No. 1 city in Michigan and the No. 3 city in the United States. The deputies work extremely hard to keep the community safe, and the community takes our advice when it comes to safety measures: by locking doors and cars; not leaving purses, laptops and phones in their cars; and using Ring cameras. The Sheriff’s Office is grateful for having the opportunity to make a difference in Oakland Township,” Bernard said.

A total of six Michigan communities made the nation’s top 100 safest cities list, including Oakland Township at 3, Hamburg Township at 38, Commerce Township at 77, Milford at 84, Independence Township at 95 and Oxford Township at 97.

Although the city of Rochester was not on the nation’s 100 safest cities list, Rochester ranked 11th in SafeWise.com’s 20 Safest Communities in Michigan for 2020 list. The company calculated that people living in Rochester — a population of 13,075 — have a 0.6 in 1,000 chance of experiencing a violent crime and a 3.7 in 1,000 chance of experiencing a property crime.

Rochester Hills, which did not make either list, was ranked 34th in the state list, which included 206 communities. The company calculated that people living in Rochester Hills — a population of 74,669 — have a 0.7 in 1,000 chance of experiencing a violent crime and a 5.9 in 1,000 chance of experiencing a property crime.
