MACOMB COUNTY — Macomb Community College students will see an increase in their tuition next year.

At the Feb. 17 Macomb Community College Board of Trustees meeting, the board voted 5-2 to authorize tuition rates for the upcoming academic year, fall 2021 through spring/summer 2022.

The rates for residents will increase 2%, from $102 per billable contact hour to $104. For Macomb students, who take 8.7 credit hours on average, the new tuition rate will result in an increase of $17.40 for a semester.

Trustees Roseanne DiMaria, Joan Flynn, Katherine Lorenzo, Shelley Vitale and Vincent Viviano voted in favor of the increased tuition rates, while trustees Frank Cusumano and Kristi Dean voted against the measure.

“Now more than ever, access to relevant and affordable college education is critical to providing a pathway to careers that are less likely to be disrupted by unemployment,” Macomb President James O. Sawyer IV said in a prepared statement. “We continue to focus on our students’ success, doing everything possible to support their continued progress including helping them overcome the unique challenges posed by the ongoing pandemic. We’re committed to fiscal responsibility, which provides the foundation for ensuring Macomb Community College can continue providing high-quality learning experiences in programs that translate into long-term opportunity for our community members.”

The tuition increases come at a time in which the majority of the college’s students have been learning online virtually since last spring to avoid the spread of COVID-19. However, there have been some classrooms open this year for certain courses.

“There are a limited number of classes and labs, which require hands-on learning experiences, currently being held on Macomb’s campuses,” Macomb Public Relations Director Jeanne M. Nicol said via email. “These are being conducted with small groups of students employing appropriate social distancing and personal protective equipment in classrooms subject to enhanced cleaning protocols.”

According to Nicol, college officials are making plans to increase the number of on-ground classes to be offered this fall, depending on factors beyond the college’s control.

“Macomb Community College’s primary focus continues to be on the safety of students, faculty and staff, while supporting the continued academic progress of our students,” Nicol said. “The college continues to monitor and be guided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as well as local public health authorities.”
