BERKLEY/SOUTHFIELD — Berkley police said that a 53-year-old Sterling Heights man died after crashing his vehicle into a pole while attempting to flee from them following a trespassing report.

According to the Berkley Public Safety Department, officers were called to a home for a reported stalking incident at approximately 10 p.m. May 25 on Ellwood Avenue, near Greenfield Road and Catalpa Drive.

Officers from the Public Safety Department began searching the area for a 2012 Chevrolet Cruze, which was the vehicle that the suspect was described to be driving. A vehicle matching that description was located on southbound Greenfield Road north of Catalpa Drive.

“An officer attempted to make a stop on a vehicle that was suspected of being the subject that was at the home, and the driver took off from there at Wiltshire and Greenfield, south on Greenfield to 11 Mile,” Berkeley Public Safety Detective Lt. Andrew Hadfield said.

The driver disregarded a red light at 11 Mile and Greenfield, according to Hadfield, and struck another vehicle that was heading westbound on 11 Mile. A Southfield man was the driver of the vehicle hit at the intersection. Hadfield said he reported minor injuries.

“The suspect driver’s vehicle crashed into a pole on the southwest corner at the Mobil gas station in Southfield,” Hadfield said. “Lifesaving measures were conducted. He was transported to Beaumont Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.”

The fatal crash occurred in Southfield, whose Police Department is conducting the investigation. Deputy Chief Nick Loussia said that officials are still looking into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

“(It is) unknown on alcohol at this time — waiting for results,” Loussia said in an email.

Hadfield said the initial call to police, made by a Berkley woman, stated that there was an unwanted person at her home. Through their initial investigation, he said, they found that the man previously had trespassed in October 2019.

“There had been previous family trouble issues with the male and the female that lived at the house,” he said. “Since then, we’ve continued the investigation looking into exactly what transpired before. We’re still working on that to determine what was going on that evening that led to this incident.”
