Shoppers who want to continue Krogering in Sterling Heights may now do so — just across the street from the grocery store’s old location at 18 Mile and Dequindre roads.

The new $35 million Kroger Marketplace building, which is over 129,000 square feet in size, officially opened to the public Jan. 15. 

During a Jan. 14 on-site media preview tour through the building, Kroger Associate Communications Manager Lauren Montalbano said this is the sixth Kroger Marketplace that has been in Michigan. 

Kroger officials said the new store employs over 250 people. Montalbano said 150 associates from Kroger’s old location across the street, which closed Jan. 14, were seamlessly transferring to work at the new place. 

“They’re very familiar,” she said. “Our customers will still see their smiling faces.”

The new Marketplace store boasts wider aisles and a wider selection of groceries, including gluten-free items. Grocery sections with green signs make it easy for shoppers to find natural or organic food, Montalbano said. 

Montalbano said the Marketplace’s selection also features an expanded variety of foods from the Middle East and around the world.

“In the Sterling Heights community, there is a lot of different ethnic community partners that we have here, and customers,” she said. “And so these expanded sets are wonderful. And even I’m a big Mediterranean lover, so I love the expanded set, and I’m always looking for new foods to try as well.”

Customers may also buy home goods, toys and clothing from Kroger’s Dip clothing line. Shoppers may stop into an on-site Starbucks Coffee shop, refuel at a gas station or get a pharmacy prescription.

For a local touch, indoor art and photographic murals highlight Sterling Heights landmarks and buildings. 

Many Sterling Heights city officials toured the Kroger Marketplace ahead of its official opening. Sterling Heights Senior Economic Development Adviser Luke Bonner said the area around 18 Mile and Dequindre has “a lot of rooftops” and residents, and he hopes that the new store will have a positive ripple effect on the area. 

“This is their largest single investment of this kind of store,” he said. “It’s a $35 million store. That means they’re normally between $20- and $24-, $25 million. So I think that, it and of itself, shows the strength of this market and the importance to Kroger.”

Bonner noted the closed Kmart that used to inhabit the space, and said that anytime a big box retailer closes, it has a “continued downward, detrimental effect on a corridor or an area.” But he added that the development allowed the rest of its plaza to be reskinned, and he said work is underway to secure new, high-quality tenants to it.

“I don’t think we can ask for anything else,” he said. 

Sterling Heights City Councilman Henry Yanez said the new store is not only great for the city, but also for the area in general.

“This is really an incredible investment, especially for the western side of Sterling Heights, where we could use more investment,” Yanez said.

Sterling Heights City Attorney Marc Kaszubski recalled the days when the Kroger Marketplace used to be a Kmart and his family went shopping there. He called Kroger’s new use of the land an unbelievable transformation.

“In this area in particular, Kmart was kind of a staple, but Kroger has really taken over the market in this area,” he said. “From my perspective, I love seeing it even though, as a child, I remembered it differently. As an adult, I’m going to love this.”

The new Kroger Marketplace is located at 2051 18 Mile Road in Sterling Heights. Store hours will be 6 a.m.-midnight every day. Learn more about Kroger by visiting
