MADISON HEIGHTS — Madison Heights Madison’s football team now has sole possession of first place in the Macomb Area Conference Silver Division after beating Marine City High 21-15 Sept. 14 at home.

With the victory, the Eagles improved to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in the MAC Silver.

With the game tied 15-15, Madison junior Aaron McClure recovered a fumble in Marine City (3-1 overall, 2-1 MAC Silver) territory with just over a minute remaining on the game clock in the fourth quarter.

The Eagles proceeded to score the winning touchdown on a 27-yard run by quarterback Austin Brown.

Madison coach James Rogers shared an evaluation of his team after the first four games of the season.

“Our defense is stealth,” Rogers said. “We got a great group of guys; they’re young. … They’re all buying in. They’re learning the mental aspect of the game, which is helping us tremendously.”

Madison also got a big defensive play in the first when senior Chauncey Ernest returned an interception 60 yards for a touchdown for the first score of the game.

After a two-point conversion, the Eagles led 8-0.

The only score of the second quarter came via a touchdown pass from Brown to receiver Troye Williams from 21 yards out.

The Eagles led 15-0 at the half.

After catching a pass, Marine City running back Charles Tigert threw the ball to teammate Aren Sopfe for the Mariners’ first touchdown of the game in the third.

Madison led 15-7 going into the last quarter of play.

With over three minutes remaining on the clock, Marine City tied the game after a short run from running back Jack Kretzschmar and a two-point conversion.

In recent years Marine City has competed at the Division 4 and 5 levels, with Madison at D-7 the last two seasons.

The difference in division levels between the two programs did not escape Brown’s attention.

“That shows that we rock,” Brown said. “We know how to ball. That’s a good showing for us.”

Up next, Madison plays at 7 p.m. Sept. 21 at Warren Fitzgerald.

The Mariners play at 7 p.m. Sept. 21 at Eastpointe High.
