ROCHESTER HILLS — Construction has begun on the Midwest department store Von Maur, which will open in the former two-story Carson’s store at 400 N. Adams Road in the Village of Rochester Hills next fall.

“We have been active in Rochester Hills since the ’70s, when my dad built Meadowbrook Mall, and we know it’s a Jacobson’s community,” said Scott Aikens, the vice chairman and director of leasing for Robert B. Aikens & Associates, the developers of the Village of Rochester Hills. “Von Maur is a lot like Jacobson’s, so we had a visceral sense that the community would really appreciate having something like Jacobson’s back.”

Rochester Hills Planning and Economic Development Director Sara Roediger said the city is thrilled with the announcement of the new Von Maur store coming to the Village.

“The Village of Rochester Hills continues to be amongst the city’s primary shopping destinations, and the addition of a quality department store such as Von Maur will only reinforce its success. We look forward to the opening of yet another great retail option for our residents,” she said in an email.

Bruce Aikens, the vice chairman of Robert B. Aikens & Associates, said the addition of Von Maur to the Village underscores the company’s commitment to enhancing guests’ experience with new places to shop, dine and be entertained.

“Von Maur offers a very high level of service, including personal shopping. They are great buyers. They have great lines, and they can merchandise the store to the population that surrounds these stores, versus a chain — like a Macy’s, which would merchandise for a region, like the Midwest. They can really learn who their customer is and then fine-tune the store to their wants and needs. To me, it’s like bringing Jacobson’s back to Rochester, which I think everybody loved.”

Headquartered in Iowa, Von Maur has 35 stores in 15 states, including three in Michigan — at Laurel Park Place, in Livonia; at Briarwood Mall, in Ann Arbor; and at Woodland Mall, outside Grand Rapids. Von Maur offers apparel, an expansive shoe department, accessories, beauty products and gifts.

The regional industry is currently experiencing a very fast-changing landscape, according to Bruce Aikens.

“We were totally cognitive of the potential to put an entertainment component there, but we’re trying to be unique. There are theaters on Rochester Road and there are theaters at Great Lakes Crossing, and there will probably be theaters to the north, so to put a theater in the Village was not necessarily creating a unique option. We believe a department store, and particularly Von Maur, is very unique and will draw a large regional area, because there are so few options to experience that kind of shopping,” he said.

The Village will be celebrating its 20th anniversary next year, and Bruce Aikens said the company has big plans for the outdoor shopping center.

“We have a number of new tenants that we will be able to announce in the next couple of weeks that are going to be coming to the Village and will open next year,” he said. “We’re also planning on reworking the parks and some of the amenities within the center to kind of bring them up to speed and reinvent (everything) for the 20th anniversary.”
